Title: more autobox probs, can it be fixed?

well, where do i start? it has a few niggling probs;

reverse~ more often than not, it will not select reverse, untill i pick the revs up a little,it finds reverse at about 1500 revs, causing it jolt backwards, not good for the prop and diff.

pulling away~sometimes, when drive is selected from start up, hot or cold, even with my foot to the floor, it will not go faster than 3/4 mph, the engine does not pick up any revs, and while moving at 3/4 mph the car shudders (same or similar to cattlegrid effect?, i get no cattlegrid effect when driving, only pulling away). the only way i can rectify this is to select park or neutral, turn engine off, restart, and all is fine.

driving along~when accelerating it has just "stalled", midrange of a gear, when no gear change is due to happen, this does not happen regularly, but this does:- at the point where the car stalls (above), instead of stalling, it just dies for half a second, then picks up where it left off. occaisionally the car will give up accelarating, just lull for a bit, then jump back to where it should be, in relation to throttle position. again, none of  these symptons happen when gear change is due.

the box was supplied new from ford approx 5yrs ago, and has done around 40k, the first half being as a cab, so it was worked hard for 20k.

so far i have:-

put injector cleaner (redex) in the tank, hoping it would clear one of the faults, but it didnt.

fitted a brand new maf sensor, again no difference

changed gearbox oil, and panel filter, checking new level is correct while warm/hot and running (old oil was burnt and old filter had seen better days, there were no apparent metal filings left in the sump to suggest excessive wear to the gearbox mechanics)

could it be another module or sensor maybe? can any one help? or is it due to die a slow painful death

by the way, great site all, i wouldn't have got this far without reading others probs in forums, but for now, im stuck ???

have you inspected the coil pack leads located under the engine cover?

You are showing symptoms of coil shorting so look for black lines down the spark plugs.

Remember, if the engine isn't 100% healthy, the gearbox wll not function properly.

Try the engine loom for cracking up whilst you are there.

Nutty,
This does not sound good.  Check out http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/autogearbox.htm
If the fluid is a good red colour and there is no sludge or bits in it it may be the wiring loom causing problems.  What is the date of manufacture?  Pre-June 96 cars can have problems with the wiring.  This information is all on that page.  ;)

update:-

thanks for the advice eric_r / bertie,

my scorp is '98 2.3 ultima.

ok, i have checked all 4 plugs, no sign of a black line at all, i have checked both coil packs, everything seems fine. i have checked all asscosiated  wiring around coil packs, including looking for broken wires underneath the wire covering, all seems ok to me.

i have had access to an obd meter, "snap on mt2500" and have found 2 fault codes:-

p1701 reverse engagement error

p1749 electronic pressure control solonoid failed/low.

eric_r / bertie or anyone else, can you help any further?
could it be a solenoid needs replacing? is there life in the old girl yet?

by the way, eric, old oil was dirty and burnt, no metal filings in oil, but there was a very tiny  amount of "firm sludge" (enough to cover a fingernail maybe) in a corner of the sump (this sat on 1 1/2" X 1/8" rectangular foam/rubber "seal"?) the "seal" is supposed to be there, adhered very straight, but cant remember why?

hope this helps you to help me

cheers nutty

??? oh dear, not heard anything from any of you guys for a week, i guess, that means the autobox is on its way to an early death :-[ i kinda hoped that the obd codes would of meant i only had to change something like a module.
is it really dying? :'(
really hoping some one can help me out here, even if only to confirm it is not repairable

p1701 reverse engagement error

p1749 electronic pressure control solenoid failed/low

many thanks to eric_r/bertie, for there assistance so far, pleassssssseeeee heeeeeeeelp.

cheers russ

hi there

here's what we have on the gearbox...http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/ccmonitor.htm

i think it's better to go to an autobox dealer for an expert opinion.

many thanks for your speedy reply scorpio_man,
that page dosent seem to help me any further, and even with the info ive obtained from you guys (thanks all), i kinda think taking it to an auto box specialist, is gonna be like throwing money away.

myself and paulscorp, have toyed wifh the idea of stripping it and reconditioning it ourselves, and may still do, but prolly not untill ive got a back up unit, ready to put in place!

ive looked around, and can get one for £125, off the shelf, tried and tested, but with NO GUARANTEE.

and one that is tried, tested, with 3 months guarantee for £245.

but, i reckon i'm gonna leave it for now, as it is driveable, join aa/rac (thanks for the advice)

a work colleague has a new box in his scorp, and he's likely to part with it very soon, as it prolly wont get another mot. as i know this box is genuinley new from ford ( i seen the reciept), it makes sense for me to wait for this, than to possibly waste more money on one of the above options.

thankyou all for your help,

russ.

(still gutted about it)
