Title: Rear suspension noises
Post by proberjohn on Sep 4th, 2005, 7:55pm
Up above the diff is a rubber tube coming out of (or going into) the chassis crossmember to the right of the diff rear centre to floor mounting bracket.

Anyone any idea what it is.  Diff breather tube?

Had a towbar fitted a few weeks ago and note that the towbar front mounting bracket which bolts using the rear diff mounting to floor bolts, fouls the diff mounting tubular support (98 model which has a big tube that runs all round the rear of the diff) hence will restrict some movement of the centre rubber - the diff is still free to move in the side bushes.  I presume that these all these rubber mounts are simply noise/vibration isolating and the diff doesn't really move about.

Looking at all this because I have some groans from rear on moving off (no it's not the wife).

Also noted some play on the inner CVs.  The propshaft will turn and move the CV inputs without the driveshafts turning.

Anysome see any problems with all this???

I have always been told that on 1998 models  you had to buy a Ford one at about £400, because no one else made them. I was told if it is a "R" reg you would no doubt be OK but on "S" reg ones its a no.

Yep there was something different about the type needed for the very last Scorps.
Wasnt it Baz that posted about it?

Baz did do an excellent posting on 1998 models as to the reason why. But now it come up again. Its a pity there was not a little box you could type your subject into and up comes the subject.
Like on Ebay and other sites, you just type in what you are after and up it all comes.

Yes I seen that, its very good. but I was wanting to find posting from other people.
Like there was a number of posting on why the figures on the dash computer had changed itself to metric and won't go back to imperial.
Yes I know which buttons to press but nothing happens.

I'm pretty certain that it's the right towbar for the car but clearances are tight.  There's less than 1/4" between the bar and the fuel tank and there should be 1/4" between the front drop brackets and the diff.  As other have noted on the later cars it's very difficult to get to the the diff support bracket mounting bolts as they're above the diff not to the the rear as on earlier models so you need a special spanner.  The consequence of this is that when they fitted the offside drop bracket they've let it turn so that it touches the diff support tubing - there's a really good picture in the suspension manual on this site.

Also the rubber tube highlighted in my first post has been damaged so I'm wondering what it is.  Not that I'll be able to do anything about it - I got my hand stuck up there yesterday and had great difficulty (and pain) getting it out ;D

Will the rubber  tube, of what you speak,  be nothing more than a  Traction Control or  Speedo  Sensor  electrical  connection cable ?
