Title: Speedometer packed in
Post by allanwbrown on Sep 8th, 2005, 2:47pm
My speedometer began to wave up and down occasionally. It has now pack in altogether. Anybody assist in the likely problem and where I can find some form of chart. Can't see it on the gear box pages. :-X

Why would it be on the gearbox pages?  Could you give more detail about under what circumstances it moves up and down? Do you mean that it has become loose?

I first noticed the problem this year when I noticed that it wasn't reading at all when I first started off in the mornings. However that was an infrequent occurence. Then A couple of months ago it would take a while to kick in. When it did the needle would move up and down until it started reading correctly. It now doesn't read anything at all most of the time but wroks occasionally. My thought was that the sensor may need sleaning and thought that went to the gearbox. Any suggestions please????

hi there

are we talking about the speedo on the dash? if that's the case, then it could be the VSS which is on the gearbox. it's a small box on the left hand side (i think) of the gearbox.

follow the instructions for a dash reset to check out the dash and VSS.

Looking at the meanings of the codes, I must check mine now I have introduced the low level sensor to my S reg. I should now have a figure to report!!

Highlander - If I was an expert then I wouldn't be asking for advice. If you were an expert you wouldn't be making such inane comments. If you can't be helpful then don't bother.

If you read your correction post it says Seed.. . .ometer which is no doubt why Highlander, jokingly, referred to Compost  and even added a Smiley 'wink' to reinforce the humour. I'm sure thats how most readers would have seen it.

A little bit abrasive, there, Allen:  >:(
On a Board with over 2,300 members there's bound to be a bit of humour and I didn't detect any malice there.

The instrument panel is a sealed unit, operated by its own electronics controller.  If the other instruments are working the problem is unlikely to be the speedo itself, it's more likely to be the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor). This can be tested by putting the instruments into Diagnostic mode: see http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/instreset.htm
If the Speed test shows zero when the car is moving you can suspect the VSS sensor:
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/electrical/intbasic/VSS.pdf
This can be confirmed if you have a higher spec. vehicle - the AVC that turns up the radio volume won't work, on an auto the box will be making odd changes, and on a speed-sensitive steering rack the power assistance won't lessen at speed.
However, if none of the isntruments are working at all check the fuses and if they are okay you may need to source another instrument panel - but failure is very rare.
