i have noticed the dash needles go round the dials and back again on my 2 litre ,96 ultima.Any rhyme or reason why this happens?

Yep! Tends to mean that the battery is on its way out. The flicking needles show that the instruments are resetting themselves due to the voltage being too low. Mine has done it on and off for a while and, sure enough, the battery just died.

Hope this helps  :)

Yes It sounds as though the battery is on the way out.
The needles going right around then settling back after starting the car is vidicative of a failing battery.
Suggest you get it checked ASAP before the winter

Just bought a mid range (60 ah) battery from my local motor factor, Varta, 4 year warranty, £58! Not too bad I thought, make sure you get the one with the correct terminals!
