Title: Alien Blood
Post by ksh64 on Sep 14th, 2005, 8:08am
Does anyone know if it is possible to somehow drain the liquid from the interior mirror before it is too late? The top is clear glass and the liquid has drained to the bottom half of the mirror.

The short answer is no. The first thing to do is to make sure the contents don't leak out and drip onto the trim below because it will damage it badly. Its corrosive. There was a post on the site where a member had dismantled the mirror, cleaned the 'gunge' out and managed to retain the mirror intact, but without the auto dipping . Essentially there are two glass plates with the liquid held between them. The post described how to do this in detail and with photographs. For the life of me I cannot find it but hopefully someone will know better!!. The main thing is to protect the trim before disaster strikes.

I had a feeling it was your post Snoopy but didn't want to presume. Could it not go on the fault finding page ?. All that entry tells you to do is replace the unit and the link just tells you how to remove it from the screen. Will PM you.

Yes it is possible.

I managed to seperate the mirror and clean out the gunge, (actually resembles a light oil) I now have a mirror without the auto dimming function..although Bob the Yop is sorting something out for me in that respect... :D

It is possible, but it is hard to do without damaging the plastic surround of the mirror (use something long and thin such as a metal ruler rather than a screwdriver) when prising apart. I also did this without removing the mirror from the windscreen.

I cleaned the 2 glass pieces, removed all the internal electrics and then put it all back together.

Down side to this is that you get a 'ghost' image, especially at night due to reflection/refraction through the 2 pieces of glass.

In his post, I think Snoopy removed one piece and padded out the back of the mirror piece to make it fit. I think this would be a better solution.

HTH.......get it done as soon as possible as once they start to show signs of failing the end comes very quickly...mine went from fine to dead inside 24hours, luckily I was in the car when it went pop and got some cloth around the mirror before any damage was caused.!

As an aside and a quick fix, if you visit your local scrap yard and they happen to have any jaguar or daimler cars in from about 1995 - 1999, you will see that the interior mirror, although a manual dipper, is made by the same company that makes the scorpio electronic one. You may also notice that it has exactly the same windscreen fixing as the scorpio one too!!!............I'll post a pic in a bit

Guys,
Snoopy's page was on the site but we lost it during the last server crash - I just knew there was something else - doh!  ::).

The page is back where it belongs - thanks Dave, http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/pcmirror.htm, and this advice is now included on the fault finder page.

Cheers.

Craig, Thanks: and now we can all find it!!. Chad, Spurred on by your response I tackled my old one today and like you followed Snoopys guide and cleaned the glass so now I have a useable unit albeit without the Auto/dipping facility. I found that Carb cleaner shifted the residue easily but a good deal had leaked out anyway. As these unite fail and supply becomes more difficult this may be the accepted answer.
