Post by Dean on Sep 22nd, 2005, 8:44pm
Hi Guys
has anyone swapped a 2.9 cossy engine for a 2.0 ? if so what does it involve ? i was told be a guy who sold me some parts that the main car loom was the same but you had to swap the engine loom and the ECU, he reconned that he'd done it and even the trip computer worked afterwards ? any ideas ?

cheers

i have been told that you can change the loom in the engine bay as it is in two sections one for engine and one for the rest of the car i will be converting apetrol to a diesel.

Guys,
Yes, the guy is right - to a point.  The engine loom runs from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) behind the glovebox to the large square connector on the offside of the engine bay beneath the ABS (C110)  On automatics, a second square connector next to it (C112) carries the autobox control wires.  You would need the PATS module if it is connected to the donor PCM, but some later PCM's had the PATS module built in - and this would have to be done right otherwise the car won't start until it's reprogrammed by a FMD.
You would need a complete donor car.  Extract the PCM and the complete loom through the bulkhead to C110, and the engine loom to the top of the engine from the other half of C110.  If the donor is an automatic, you would need both halves of the C112 loom as well, including the part that runs down the top of the autobox.  Working carefully and without pulling or kinking the wiring should get it out fairly easily.
If the donor is a manual you will need to carry over the entire clutch system and the pedal box too.
That's the engine running, provided that you have kept the PATS connected to the PCM.  But there are detail differences between autoboxes - the autobox on the Cosworth has more clutch plates to cope with the greater torque, and the differential has a lower ratio, so the 2L might be struggling a bit in the mid range unless you change the diff.
There is nothing insurmountable there providing that you have the complete donor and you take your time over the conversion.
Converting to diesel is more involved because the fuel system and tank would need changing, (no fuel pump) as well as the PCM, looms and PATS.  Again, having the complete donor available is the best way to go.

Can I barge in and ask a question here?
