Title: 24v opinions required : )
Post by Dave on Oct 6th, 2005, 3:14pm
Afternoon all,

following on from the other thread, our 96 24v is still a non starter. First time it happened, it suddenly decided to work again. Now it refuses completely. It turns over happily but just will not fire.

We have found that there is no spark, and have so far checked the following:

-both fuse boxes and drain holes (dry)
-battery (brand new)
-all fuses and relays (renewed fuel pump relay)
-wiring loom at front of engine (repaired insulation on 1 wire)
-PATS light normal
-all wires on battery correctly
-fuel cut off switch
-fuel pump pressuring when ignition on

Going by old posts and the fault finding guide we are now looking at crank position sensor, and/or cam position sensor or associated wiring.

Any thoughts would be appreciated as the MOT is about to run out  ::)

Thanks in advance  :)

Crank sensor good place to start, it provides signal for both ignition & injection, can sensor tells ECU where you are in the firing order, be sure to check wiring also.

Hi Chaps,

Martin - thanks for that, will have a look at these sensors for sure.

Andrew - yeah thanks I saw that tip so tried it but it didn't seem to make any difference, worth a go though!

Keep 'em coming!  :)

Dave,
The next thing to do is to get the OBD read.  If a sensor (Like the CKP) has failed there will be a DTC recorded identifying the problem, probably P0320 because the PIP signal will be missing.
(see http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/ccmonitor.htm)
Check the wiring to the CKP sensor down at the front of the engine behind the front crankshaft pulley has not been damaged and that the connector is clean.
Next, check the connections to the DIS module (the box at the front of the engine from which the HT leads run) and finally the ED module down on the offside wing below the headlamp.

f you're sure all the wiring is okay, change the CKP. It's the most common cause of failure and if it is that then the car will start immediately you change it.  ;D

Hi all,

Firstly, a massive THANKS to Barrie who came all the way from near Blackpool today to scan my poorly motor. I am so grateful, thank you.

The scan: The Status page, under 'Continuous monitoring complete?' said Fuel system YES, Comprehensive component YES.

Under 'non-continuous monitors complete?' it said
Oxygen sensor NO, oxygen sensor heater NO, EGR system NO.

On the codes page it came up with no faults. Said something like 'P00000 no fault codes'.. or it might have just said 'no fault codes'.

At first we were disapointed but now i'm hoping this will mean something to somebody.

....?  :)

Barrie was thinking it could well be something manual, coil pack perhaps?

Thanks all,
Dave

hi dave

no fault codes stored. :-/ did you try and start it again? try starting and if it doesn't fire, leave the ignition on for at least 2mins. keep an eye on the PATS led. see http://www.motors.freeuk.com/faq/ford1.htm

still think it's electrical. :(
