Hi all.

Says this:
CKP CranKshaft Position sensor:
Provides basic timing data for the PIP signal
Enhanced: shows RPM based on CKP input

Does that mean that the CKP sensor supplies data to the rev counter instrumentation?

So if the CKP sensor was kaputt, the engine wouldn't run, but if you turned the engine over the rev counter wouldn't move either?

Could someone verify whether the rev counter shakes when you turn the engine over? I can't remember if mine does, or if it's supposed to. I remember the rev counters on my last cars did this.

This could give me more clues!

Somebody _please_ correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't the rev counter digital, and the actual rev signal computed from (i think) air/fuel flow?

If so, then the rev counter shouldn't move at all if the engine isn't running..

I may be wrong though..

The CKP is the sensor that tells the EECV Powertrain Control Module when the engine crankshaft is just before TDC so that the PCM can command a spark event using the PIP (Profile Ignition Pickup) pulse.The actual cylinder about to be fired is computed by the PCM from the CaMshaft Position sensor (CMP)
On the EECV engines, the tacho is driven from a computed signal from the PCM; on the diesel engines, it receives the RPM signal from the alternator.

If the CKP sensor has failed the engine won't fire at all, since it will not have a PIP signal for the ignition to work on. If the engine runs but the tacho has failed it must be the instrument display faulty, or more probably a bad contact on the multiplug behind the instrument panel.

Can you state the problem? Does the engine run and does the tacho work, both or neither? ???
