Sadly a recent family loss has had me charging up and down from Essex to Manchester and back every few days recently, with more to follow.

My 2.3 97 Ultima Auto Estate has been brilliant, 133k, but I noticed on the way back today that I was getting the old c grid effect increasingly often. I sprayed the MAF a few weeks ago, the oil is fine colour wise. She has full history etc etc.

I use supermarket petrol, never previously having to do 500 mile round trips regularly, and hadn't noticed a problem/difference before.

Should I be looking to change to "proper petrol" ie Shell/Esso or just get into the habit of doing maf every few weeks?

Have to say this is the ultimate car! 5 hours of zzzz Sunday M6/M1/M25 225 miles without an ache or hiccup, with speeds of 0 - 70+ (what me officer!), without hassle or stress.

Now please tell me its the maf or petrol Can't afford a new box!!

if you have cleaned maf properly, should be ok, no need to do every two weeks, and supermarket fuel should not contribute to cattlegrid effect. ???

Cattle Grid normally occurs when the torque converter on the auto box is on it's way out. The good news is that the TC is a separate replaceable item and doesn't require a whole new box.

Thanks for that - what sort of cost would I be looking at to replace the torque converter if it goes?
