Title: Inaccurate trip computer
Post by ottopmh on Nov 2nd, 2005, 6:12am
Does anyone know if Scorpio's trip computer calculates average consumption also when standing and engine is running?

At least the display changes then from l/100km to l/hour. That would indicate that it will not affect average consumption measurement.

The reason why I'm asking is that it shows pretty accurate values when driwing on countryside, e.g. long journeys. But when driving on urban area there is quite a gap between real and trip's values.

On long journeys the trip usually claims something between 8,4 and 8,8 litres per 100 km and the consumption calculated after filling her up is around the same. Usually a bit higher though.

But when driving to and from work for example (all urban), the trip says 9,2 to 9,4 and the real is 9,8 to 10,2. Typically, not always.

My conclusion is that trip does not calculate average consumption when standing on traffic lights etc. Obviously there's no standing on lights on longer journeys.

Does anyone know?

Thanks!

Otto

Hi Otto,

the trip computer continues to monitpr and update the mpg (or the metric equivalent). You've got readings for  'current' and the 'average' mpg. The 'current' reading is always changing even if doing constant speed. I've been recording my 'average'  readings for future reference and can confirm this will also change if you stop for a while.

You'll find that the higher the average MPH the mpg increases (although the graph plot can be either straight or curved - with a peak around about 55mph- depending on source of data included).

It will also depend if you do a constant speed over a measured distance or variable speeds (including 'stop-start'). For ease of reference I'm using "variable speeds" over repetetive, known trips - even so, you'll get variation.

It just confirms what the published mpg figures state for the Scorpio.
