Title: Excessive smoke.
Post by janspeed on Nov 2nd, 2005, 7:35pm
Hi.
When i put my foot down on my 2.5TD there is a lot of black smoke that comes out of the exhaust, and when parked up and you rev the engine it sounds like the engine is missing and the black smoke again.
The injectors are being over hauled but i`m worried that that may not cure it.
It has been mentioned about th EGR.

Hi Craig.
Hows it going?
No the turbo is pretty quiet really, you can hear it in an enclosed space but only the usual turbo whistle.
I also have a 2.8INJ Turbo Capri and the turbo whistle on that is quite pronounced, nothing wrong with that, it has been rebuilt.
Tho it is a bigger turbo than the Scorp`s.

have you checked the state of the air filter as this can cause black smoke on a diesel if it hasn't been changed in a while.

I have a 2.5TD and it is also blowing  Black smoke, the black smoke seem to happen when I accelerate, when the engine is cold. This has happenend since I bought the car over 2 1/2 year ago.It keeps on passing the emisions on the MOT so I haven't really bothered to find out what is causing it, I put it down to the engine having done nearly 190,000miles.I was on the motorway last week and looked down at the speedo and I was doing over the speed limit and she was still pulling like a good un.I am interested in the problem so lets hope somebody can come up with some answers

A diesel will smoke more as the miles clock up.
Everything wears, bores, turbo's etc etc.
It's when you leave a fog behind you doing a constant 50 you have to worry or if the performance goes ;D

As mentioned a good service can make alot of difference.
That would be the first thing to do.

Also some injector cleaner can work well.

Oh & turbo whistle can be a sign of a damagd housing or turbine. Has to be loud, the kind that makes people turn around to see what's comming down the street ;D
I used to have a GT Turbo that did that, all you could here was a turbo whistle no engine noise. Kind of strange to hear it whistle past }{

Seems to pretty normal for these diesel scorps, mine's a good fifty a day smoker.

It's much more noticable now in the dark evenings as whenever I accelerate the air following looks really smoky in the following cars headlamps, like a smokescreen dropped by bond!! Expecting to get pulled over very soon due to it. The power is pretty lacking as well I've noticed, long hills on motorways equal no chance without a decent run up.

I've just tried some injection cleaner and hope that will help, but am sourcing a new engine for it.

I've a feeling mine may be a worn fuel pump, causing excess fuelling hence the smoke. Jay your symptons do sound like a blocked injector, have you had any luck with the injector change yet?

Otherwise not too sure.

:D
Hi Paul and all.
The injectors came back over hauled, and i`m now  £200 lighter in my pocket.
I also cleaned the EGR, new fuel and air filter, result,
The car is now much more fuel efficient. and more inportantly no smoke.
