Title: air con pump
Post by dingo-virgin on Nov 4th, 2005, 2:06pm
Afternoon all,

Had my scorp towed to the garage when a rear wheel bearing quickly deteriorated whilst on the motorway.

garage has just poned to say the car wont run because the aircon pump is seized and has chewed the belt!
They fitted new belt but the pulley keeps locking up.

Any ideas on this? Not been able to get and have a look and check tensioners but they are sure it's the pump/pulley.

Is replecing the pump easy to do or can the pump bearings be replaced?

thanks for any advice

hi there

if it's the pump, just dis-connect the pressure switch from next to the n/s headlight (under the black cover). that will stop the system.

re changing the compressor. it's not that hard, but you need to get an a/c guy to remove all the gas first. don't leave any of the pipes exposed to the air for long as moisture is an a/c killer!

hi there

yes. it's the only thing behind that cover (n/s). the dryer (coke can) has the pressure switch on top of it. just follow the wiring.

Dingo,
You could also reach down to the top of the compressor and disconnect the multiplug.  This releases the electric clutch on the compressor and lets it free-wheel.  ;)

thanks eric

glad i've got a few things to look at in the morning now,

let's hope I can get away without replacing the pump.

Get the feeling I can manage without air con for a few months anyway  :)

Been to the garage this moning.

Seems like the bearings for the pulley are shot so it keeps locking when 'free wheeling'.

The mechanic sugested the cheapest repair would be to cut the pulley off then find a smaler belt to fit,

hi there

would it not be easier to find a replacemement from one of those 'find-a-part' services on the web and fit it. :-/a/c is very usefull in damp/wet winter because it keeps the windscreen from misting.

The mech said he would have a look at what is available or if others are compatable but thought the cost of having it de-gassed & gassed again would be quite high.

I'll try to get a quote in the mean time,
Hadn't really considered the de-humidifying aspect.

You need to check that the belt won't snag on anything if you cut the pulley & if O.K do you need to cut it off ???
Also you may find the tensioner pulley may not work correctly. You need to check first & be sure. Also you will have to find a belt.
If you decide to replace the pump I have one for your car if you want one cheap ;D

Let me know what you want for the pump in case we decide to swap.

Not spoken to the garage for a couple of days so not sure what progress has been made yet. (on a back burner i think)

thanks for the help

A    re-gas  of  the A/C   system  is  usually between  £50-80,   not bad  if you get 4/5   years of   use  before the next   re-gas.
