Title: 2.9 12V Auto - gear problems
Post by wiskin on Nov 8th, 2005, 10:54pm
I am new  ;D to the Scorpio forum and what I have seen so far is a superb service to owners of Ford Scorpio's who would struggle under normal circumstances to find advice for such an under rated car. I only two months ago bought a scorpio due to needing a bigger car for the family so looked at the Ford Scorpio and looking at reviews could not find any majority based problems other than the look (To me couldn’t see what the fuss was about) so I went and purchased a 1997 (P) 2.9 12v (Wanted the 24v) but still impressed.

Anyway, to continue with the purpose of my mail…. I have noticed that the gear select seems laboured (Auto) I can only describe it as being in to higher gear to soon and when you attempt to accelerate (Without flooring the mother) it has a laboured effect and does not change down.

This does not happen all the time, about 50% of the time it runs through the gears as smoothly as a peach.  There is also a rare clunk that happens every now and then, So I was wondering if anyone else has suffered this and if the problem is simple (I pray) or I am looking at a box change ???

From memory I think you can adjust the kick down cable on the 12V ;)
Your box does not have sport & econ mode.
Sounds like you would like a sport button to me ;D

Try ajusting the kick down cable.

I dont want it to kick down quicker (Eats enough and it doesnt impress the wife  ;D)
will that sort out the labouring though? would this not be (I pray) down to the vacum pipe or a switch somewhere?

how do i add that sport button then???

Sorry mate you can't add a sport button, your car is the only frog eye that don't have it. The 12V is almost the same as the Mk3 Granada engine & gearbox wise so is a bit old school :)
I have read your post again, you say 50% of the time its fine, it could be it just needs fresh oil. What colour is your transmission oil & how many miles have got on the clock.

Only joking about the sport button

The oil is not quite red, but not a burnt colour either and no deposits - 112000 on clock

As a start ,have a  dekko  at   the   MAF ,    a quick  clean  of   this  component  sometimes works wonders for the smoothness  of the gear changes.

Well your oil sounds O.K but I would change it anyway as it usally works for me ;)

MAF = mass air flow sensor

Yours has 2x AFM's ;D = Air flow meter
Same kind of thing really but cleaning yours won't effect the gearbox as yours is the basic one.

Plug your car into a star tester or get a garage to check it as maybe a shift soleniod is playing up.

Star tester?
How much should i expect to pay through a garage for this test?

A star tester will cost you about £10 on ebay (but you will have to figure out how to use it), a garage will probably charge the same if they have one & Ford well alot more than £10 I bet.

Update
Have a read of this http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/star.htm

I think you will have to make a connector up as most star tester are 3 or 5 pin.

Auto codes are below as I am not sure if they are on the site. Code 566 or 577 could cause your problems.

522 - Neutral/Drive Switch
558 - Electrical Circuit (EVR) Electronic vacuum regulator
565 - Canister purge colenoid (CANP)
566 - 3rd/4th gear solenoid (ATA)
577 - Kick-down switch (KDS)
629 - Torque converter lock-up clutch colenoid (LUS)
