Title: Just another 'I need help with my car!'
Post by pback on Nov 10th, 2005, 1:10pm
Hi there!

This is my first post here. After reading for a few hours, I must say that you have collected alot of impressive knowledge in these pages.
The reason for asking for help, is that my situation does not fit neatly in the fault-findingtree (at least as I can see). I've searched the forum for similar threads but not found exactly what I'm looking for.
The car is a 2.0 DOHC (-96).
There are basicly two problems.
1. The car is sometimes difficult to start. The starter turns, but I must either try 5-10 times before it start, or give up and try the next day (when it can start on the first time). The voltage in the battery is around 12.45.

2. After driving a couple of minutes the engine suddenly dies (when standing still or at slow speed/low rpm) and won't start when I try.

So, what can be the problem?
Iv'e tested the fuel injection pump relay (R17) and the ignition lock relay (R21), and a couple of fuses (can't remember which ones at the moment). But since the car works perfect for short periods, it seems strange to blame fuses, relays or the fuel pump (right?).

The battery should not be the issue, since a bad battery wouldn't stop the car once the engine is running?
It's been raining/damp the last couple of days, which could support fuseboxproblem (but I have all the covers, and the aux. fusebox is just 3 months old. And I have no other strange electrical behavior, which I understand often comes with corroded fuseboxes).

Can the CKP sensor and/or CMP sensor be faulty? Do I have to own an OBD2reader to test them, or can I do it some other way?

Any suggestions?

(hope you understand my english, I'm from Sweden)

The fuel cut off loom can be the problem See http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/dohcloom.htm for details!

Mine was bad when I got it and it misfired now and then!

Worth a look

It certainly sounds a like  high voltage or sparker prob.
Take the  cover off the top of  the engine and inspect the spark plug wiring , look for evidence of short-circuiting and  for dried and flaking  plastic wire insulation.  Take  a  look at  all  other  accessible  loom  wiring in the engine area.
Good Luck

I've started to inspect the wiring now. But one problem is that my engine isn't the same as in the pictures ( http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/dohcloom.htm).
I don't have the enginecover that you refers to.. But I'll check the spark plug wiring..

Is there any way to test the fuel regulator without owning an obd2-cable?

hi there

you must have the 2.0 8valve engine. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/technical.htm

not sure how to check it without using obd :-/
post your location and see if anyone lives nearby with one. :)

just noticed you're from sweden! :-[

You are absolutely right scorpio_man, it's the 8 valve engine.

Does anyone know how to find the fuel cut off loom in a DOHC 2,0 8v? I've searched the site for pictures and descriptions, but not found it.
