Title: Autobox Oil Change - Scotland Post by proberjohn on Nov 15th, 2005, 10:58pm Anyone any knowledge of a good garage near Perth for an auto gearbox oil & filter change on my 98 2.3. Looks like it's the Mercon V fluid. Some garages claim to be able to change most of the fluid. |

Title: Re: Autobox Oil Change - Scotland Post by Thunderchild on Nov 17th, 2005, 10:05am Automotive Automatics in Gordon Street (near the bottom of Leith Walk) Edinburgh get my vote. Really helpful and knowledgeable people with all the equipment to carry out any kind of work on your gearbox. I've used them and can't recommend them highly enough. Thunderchild |

Title: Re: Autobox Oil Change - Scotland Post by proberjohn on Nov 24th, 2005, 11:29am Spoke to Automotive Automatics (thanks Thunderchild) and they put me onto a AutoFed member in Forfar so it's booked in there for next wednesday. He will do a torque convertor flush as well. The local Ford garage use them for all auto work - they weren't keen on doing the job "never done one before". The Forfar guys don't use Mercon V but Dexron III with an additive - it seems to be a common thing to do in the USA as far as I can see on the web. I'll let you know how it goes. |

Title: Re: Autobox Oil Change - Scotland Post by proberjohn on Nov 24th, 2005, 5:30pm I think he quoted £85 for the basic filter and fluid change - it will be more with the convertor flush. The Edinburgh guys quoted the same(ish) but qualified that with added costs if adjusting the brake bands needed bits to be removed (which it does). I'll see what he says about the band adjustment on Wednesday. Charles Butler - 01307 465898 |

Title: Re: Autobox Oil Change - Scotland Post by proberjohn on Nov 30th, 2005, 2:17pm Back from Forfar (no jokes about "how far" plse). Small place but the guy (Jeff Butler) seems to know his stuff. Test drove the car; changed the fluid; flushed new fluid through the torque convertor (by disconnecting a cooler hose); adjusted the brake bands; and fitted a new filter. Took around 2 1/2 - 3 hours and cost £138 (inc VAT) (the uplift over the basic quote was for the extra fluid and time for the convertor flush). Box seems fine and possibly a bit smoother on the changes. Feedback from Jeff is that box seems fine, probably the first fluid change it's had (at 65,000 miles) and just 1/2 turn on the one band adjustment. Nice red/pink fluid again (just turning brownish before). They used Dexron III plus a ATF additive. |
