Title: ABS & TC lights on intermittently
Post by Neil W on Nov 20th, 2005, 6:35pm
I have an intermittent problem on which I would appreciate your advice. I have read the info on the main site, so have an inkling of possible problems to investigate.

Both lights come on from time to time. They both go out after engine start but every now and then come on again - and stay on - once under way. If I stop and switch off the engine and then restart, generally the lights do not come on again. Some time ago, this would happen maybe once every few months. Now it is happening around several times a week. Clearly there is a problem and it seems that the likely causes are:

     1. Fault in controller - water getting in?
     2. ABS sensors to rear wheels need cleaning or  replacement.
     3. Rear wheel bearing on way out (there is nothing to suggest this at present).

Am I on the right track, or is there anything else I should check?

Short of dismantling, I cannot see an easy way to check the rear bearings. I have tried to twist the hub by gripping the wheel in both vertical and horizontal planes, without any play being evident. Is there a way to check them?

The car has 100,000 miles on the clock and I've had the car from new. June 1998 model.

Thanks,

Neil W.

neil....
would recommend checking/cleaning the sensors first,do go carefull though, sometimes they can be a little difficult to remove,so no "brute force" so to speak...

Thanks Craig. I'll start with them first and see what happens.
