Title: Poor performance when cold
Post by pallieter1942 on Nov 23rd, 2005, 8:07pm
I own a Scorpio 1996 automatic gearbox DOHC 16V 2l
Very good and reliable car until the outside temperature goes below 5 celsius (41 fahrenheit.)
then the engine runs very bad and it is impossible to drive faster than 40km/hr ( 25miles) It seems like the fuel is cut of at 40km/hr.
After several miles of trouble then suddenly the problem is over and  the car runs very smooth again.
Next morning :the same problem.
once the outside temperature is above 5 celsius: no problems.
Somewhat seems to set the engine in Limited operation.
I have already tryed to disconnect the temperature sensors but without succes.
If the car departs from a warm garage : no problems even when the outside temperature is below zero.
Even a Ford dealer wasn't able to find the reason of the problem.
Any ideas?

It is already the third season i am struggling with the problem.
Next year I think to retire and to move to Spain in order to avoid temperatures beneath 5 c

thanks for helping.

Have you had an OBD scan done?

Is  electrical  conductivity  reduced  by low  temperatures ?

i.e. a connection  or component  that operates  fine in temperate weather  will  be  less efficient in  cold weather. I seem to recall another poster had a similar problem.  Dectecting  the guilty component or  connection is rather more tricky.

Electrical conductivity should increase with lower temperatures iirc, but I suppose there may be a bad joint which moves when the temperature change.

Could be a stupid thing to suggest, but have you checked the fuel filter?
