Title: heating
Post by ralphie on Nov 26th, 2005, 2:42pm
Hello Scorpio friends.
I have posted a topic about my poor heating on my L reg scorpio.
I have been advised it may be the matrix that is blocked. Now it looks a very big job to replace it so before I have my car pulled to bits please advise me knowing this....  the heating has been poor for a few years and now is almost non existent. I have changed the thermostat, but have just read the words curry smell.
I have had that smell when the heater is on for a long time, is this confirmation of a blocked matrix?
Ralphie..

No ! But it is usually an indication that the hater matrix or the associated ipes are leaking INSIDE the car. Antifreeze mixture has that distintive smell.

Ralphie,
Yep, Snoopy's right, of course  ;D - the curry smell means that there is a small leak in the heater matrix (actually another kind of radiator) or pipe inside the evaporator unit.
From your description it sounds as though the heater matrix has clogged up with gunge that refuses to allow any hot coolant through from the engine. In addition is appears as if a seam has split.
The problem with flushing the system through atm is that with a leak already, removing the blockage will make the leak far worse.   :o
IIWY I'd source a secondhand or new heater matrix, roll up your sleeves and replace the matrix before it gets any worse - then you'll have heating again, too.
