Title: Thinking of getting an auto box-some questions!
Post by Endaf on Dec 5th, 2005, 5:27pm
Hia, been looking on Autotrader.co.uk & there's a few tidy Scorpio's for a reasonable price, a few are automatic though, never driven an auto before, would anyone recommend? is it generally heavier or better on petrol? anything I should look out for?
thanks...

Worse on petrol :)
I wouldnt have anything else now, driven autos for years (Lazy :))
make sure the gearbox oil is reddish colour and not brown/black or have black burnt bits in it.

Oh and cable tie your left foot to the seat till you get the hang of it. Seen some good emergency stops by manual drivers trying to clutch an Auto  ;D

the electronic gearbox fitted to the scorpio is a tried and tested unit, and if looked after is very reliable, personally i drive nothing else now as well (but for different reasons),however as highlander has already said,do check the oil level and the colour/condition of the oil, make sure the box changes without any hesitation and smoothly, finally there are a few scorpio's out there, shop around, try out a few and make sure you get the best value 1 for the money, service history usually helps as well.......
good luck with the search.......

It' s   the only way to drive,  why people  persist  with  all that   gear changing  malarkey is  beyond me.

Good-  Ease of  use
           Smoothness
           great acceleration from standing start
           no whining  when in reverse

 Bad-  Fuel consumption
longevity of units  ( fairly rare to get a trouble free box over 100K miles)
high cost of repairs or replacement.

here here Mr Floppy
wouldn't have anything but auto in today's traffic.
unfortunately running costs are higher.
personally think "trade off" is worth it

hehe, done that myself in mk3 cossie, heavy acceleration, forgot it was auto, and went to change gear! left foot full on the brake! :o

its funny looking back now, but at the time it scared me s***less, took a few seconds before the penny dropped.

Russ

p.s auto....definatly, makes driving so much less hassle.

Endaf,

In addition to being in the right gear for almost any situation that you encounter on the roads, you can spend more time on reading the road ahead and spotting those feet/head walking about between the parked cars.

That said, I drive a manual Scorp. Very happy with it and on reflection only big improvement would be an auto.

Geoff
