Title: Fuelpump won't stop
Post by Chaoslord on Dec 8th, 2005, 7:31pm
Hi.
I got a Scorpio 96 2.3 estate that all of a sudden wouldnt turn over, so I changed the battery.
Car started, and wifey left for work in it. But when she was to returm home later that day, the car wouldnt start again. She applied jumpercables and got it running.
When i got to take a look at it, i noticed a fizzing sound coming from the fuel injection area, and after some investigation, i found out that the fuelpump was still running. Even after the ignition was turned off. I disconnected ground from the battery and it stopped. Reconnected it again, and it started back up, allthough abit intermittent.
Could this be the dreaded wet fusebox syndrome (WFS)?
I also noticed some irradic (sp?) clicking coming from relay 17, injection relay. I dont know if thats the relay controlling the fuelpump in the gas tank, but it would explain a lot.

Any thoughts on this?
Sorry for the long post btw :)

hi, and welcome.

from your own investigations, it seems you know exactly where to start looking, the fusebox, it does sound like you may have some moisture there somewhere, something appears to be shorting to give the pump a permanant live feed.

are fuse box covers and battery cover present?

Well...ahem.....You see *cough*
I kinda bought a too large battery. The battery cover wouldnt fit, so i left it off. Only for a day though. I wasnt aware then that the batt cover was so important. I am now though....
Is the fusebox permanently damaged, or can it be dried out?

You could try using a hair dryer or similar to apply a GENTLE  heat to the area in order to dry it out. You could also look here http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/fuseboxes.htm and at the link to 'rebuild 2'.

Phew.
Just finished taking the aux fusebox apart. Drying each copper piece with a papertowel.
took pictures of each layer, so hopefully i can put it back together again.
There was a LOT of water there. No wonder i had trouble.

Thx again to all the ppl who helped out, and to the makers of this site.  Its simply awesome!
