Title: 1996 Scorpio Rear axle
Post by VWKombi on Dec 9th, 2005, 10:08pm
Any help appreciated here. My employer ha a 1996 scorpio, with the left rear CV joint spline worn to smooth. I have tried 3 replacement parts so far, it looks as though this car has a 30mm spline on the axle, or approx, and the replacements we have got so far appear to be 26mm splines with a smaller diameter CV joint as well. Also, it is a shorter shaft than 2 of the replacements as well.

other than changing the rear transmission totally, does anyone know where we can get an axle and CV joints to fit the existing rear diff?

Thanks,

VW

Hi & Welcome
Firstly what engine does your car have?
It sounds like a Cossie as that has bigger CV joints & thicker shafts but the spline part that the hub fits to are all the same size?
Also drive shafts are handed, ones longer than the other.

Thanks, hadn't considered the handed aspect, will check tomorrow, engine size? hell, that as well?????? This car is turning into a nightmare to work on.
Thanks for the reply, will bave to check some more,

The splines on the shafts we have had are smaller than the existing one I took off, we've been told that we can't get CV joints seperately here, (Ireland), it is the shaft and both CV joints or nothing. Will keep hoping to find the right one soon

Where are you getting the replacment drive shafts from?
The splines should not be different?
Are you taking about the splines the hub fits on ???

Thanks for the reply Dave, we're getting second hand parts from a wreckers yard near Cork, so far we've been sent 3 axles, one was too long (wrong hand?) the other 2 have been correct length, but the CV joints have been 10mm smaller in diameter, and and the bolt hole pitch has been smaller than the differential and wheel hub.

The axle we took out has a 30mm diameter spline to take the CV joint, the spares have a 25mm diameter spline, so we can't swap CV joints either,

We'll keep looking, at least I know I'm not entirely insane yet.

Thanks

Well I am guessing you are looking for a  95+ 24V Cosworth left hand side shaft as that is what you have described. Only one from the same model car will fit.
Bigger diameter shaft, bigger CV joint & different bolt pattern.
The MK3 24V is different also so must be the later cars.
I have one but the post will be alot to you so try & source local mate.

Thanks Dave, will let you know how we get on, my boss must have bought the only model of this one in Ireland I think.

Thanks for all the help, we found an axle/CV joints in the 17th wreckers yard in Dublin last friday for €60. Fitted and working again.
