Title: Engine cutting out.
Post by magnetono59 on Dec 11th, 2005, 2:03pm
My scorpio is a 2ltr executive estate 16V. I am experiencing a problem with the engine cutting out even during idle. The problem only started yesterday as I was driving towards town having travelled about 1 mile the engine cut out. After a few minutes I was able to restart and had no more trouble until today when the problem reocurred. I would appreciate any suggestions. I have 124.000 miles on the clock.

Hi,

first thing to do it clean the IAC (idle air control) valve. Not got a pic to hand to show it on the 2 litre 16v engine but it should be easily accessible. Take it off (2 10mm bolts) then clean it with carb cleaner, available in a spray can. May have to use a cotton bud to shift difficult deposits.

Hope this helps  :)

I removed the Air Flow Sensor connector(the one nearest the air filter) and it appears to solve the problem. The engine idled for some time,I reconnected the sensor and the engine cut out. I tried this a few times and each time I reconnected it the engine cut out although not immediately most times. I went for a test drive about four miles with the sensor disconnected and I had no problems. Is it possible that this sensor could cause such a failure.

Quite possible, might find it a bit sluggish with the sensor disconnected, less so if it is a manual. If it is an auto you may find the gear changes are quite poor!

The estate is manual. During the test drive the car performed well there appeared to be no difference. Is it dangerous to drive the car without this sensor connected. Can the sensor be tested with a multimeter, what readings would one expect across the four pins into the sensor. And finally where would I find the IAC valve.

Its maybe just needing a clean rather than failed completely
Try this http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm

Theres also sections on testing etc

shouldnt be a great problem running disconnected.

hi there

you don't want to run to long with the MAF disconneted. this plays a big part in the fueling. without it, the car doesn't know how much air is entering the manifold, so can't work out how much fuel to add.

Went for a drive today with sensor disconnected,no problems. Stopped and reconnected the sensor the engine cut out before I got back in the car. I am now convinced that the MAF is causing the engine to stall.I have ordered a new sensor 135.00 Euro over here. Will arrive tomorrow and I hope that is the end of my problem. Hope this information may help somone else.
