Title: Have i been done?
Post by leftofcentre on Dec 16th, 2005, 7:20pm
Bought 24v off Ebay last week. (Item #4595589942).

On the auction description it says:

"The car is part of the Granada Owners Club

The car has eletric everthing lots of toys for boys to play with

Car also has a full service history just been serviced  only ford parts used on this vehicle

The car has oil changes at every 3 thousand miles fully synthetic oil

The car has just had 4 new Goodyear F1 Eagle tyres fitted

Air Con in full working order

The car also has Traction control, swichable sports transmission in perfect working order

Bad Bits

There is a slight rattle on start up only when its really cold this is the hydraulic tensioner filling with oil and only for a split second

The sunroof has the usuall lack of use and sticks

Drivers side heated seat has stopped working have not investigated why could be wiring came loose under the seat will see if i can get that fixed

There is a scratch on the drivers side and on the bonnet caused be some kind sole who can keeps there hands to themselves

The offside wheel arch has very slight surface rust starting seen on picture
"

Had to go to Kilsyth from Inverness to collect the car and it was a wet evening to say the least.  Having accepted the vehicle though and on driving home a noise became apparent form the nr side fron wheel.  This noise is only evident on turning right?? And sounds like a tyre rubbing (which it is not).  It starts even on the slightest turn of the steering wheel.  Can it be assumed that this is the wheel bearing?

A local garage today took the car for a test drive and said it was the wheel bearing.  If this is so, shouldnt the noise be sounding all the time?

Secondly. having given the car a once over at home in daylight, i checked the gearbox oil.  It is browny with a red tinge. I assume this is bad news right?  Whats the smell supposed to be like?  I know on the forums it says its not supposed to have a rancid smell.  All oil no matter how new smells rancid to me.  Can anyone elaborate?

Again, the local garage says not to worry about it although he will change the oil for me if i really want him to.

Thirdly, the drivers heated seat does not warm up even though the switch illuminates when pressed.  Any ideas?

Fourthly and my final big gripe.  The previous owner has screwed one of those push battery op lights to the roof lining just behind the sunroof.  My first thoughts were that this was because he apparently "showed" the car during his club meetings and had that light fitted to save the car battery. WRONG!

On removal of this tacky lamp i find a huge gaping hole in the roof lining which has been drill holed.  I would say possible to gain access to the sunroof which must have got jammed at some point.  However i have learnt from this website that the motor isnt even located there.  It looks awful and i have no choice but to leave the effing placky lamp there (from ikea i have just learnt).  Any ideas, suggestions?

My wife rang and spoke to the previous owner/seller on ebay and he is having none of it.

Any comments?

The car was £1070 by the way with 88K on the clock.
??? ???

The rattle is common, some last for ages with it,can read all the pros and cons of the rattle elsewhere on here.
The gearbox oil is probably the original stuff and has just aged, mine was the same,my last Grannie had a broken gearbox and the oil was exactly like a burnt chippie smell, the seats are always broken on the drivers side, don't worry, never use it anyway.
I'd change the gearbox oil and the bearing and forget the rest!

if its not the bearing, check the stabiliser link bar and power steering rack, the same happened to my car, changed the link bar, problem not solved, power steering rack was worn, changed that, all ok, im not to sure if the link bar caused the wear on the rack, or the other way around, but the problem was connected there somewhere.
link bars are easy and cheap to replace, a power steering rack is easy to replace too, but being a 24v, it will be the speed sensitive type, not cheap.

I think i'd not buy a car off ebay without seeing it first.  It's not that I think owners misrepresent their cars, but let's face it, we all see things differently.

In my case I bought an ex ebay motor which failed to sell and got it for a song, although it got plenty of attention from me prior to handing over the money.

The other advice i'd offer is to set your total budget for a car and then spend only around 70% of it on the purchase price, keeping the rest back for the inevitable repairs that ensue with older big cars.

Ultima 88k Facelift grill, 12 spoke alloys for £1000!!

Looks a good buy to me  ;D

wheel bearing - easy enough
heated seat    -  wiring/switch/relay/fuse/element
at worst replace the seat.
Chain rattle - a lot of them do, somethings worn/blocked. with the value of these cars then i'd leave it and chance it I dont think theres a huge difference in price between sorting it now or repairing the damage afterwards or break it and buy another one :)
My gearbox oil is reddish brown too, runs fine.
replace the roof lining from a scrapper

P.s. I have a spare drivers seat (Edinburgh) ;)

Welcome to Scorpio land  ;D

Hi Mr Highlander, although is Edin not lowlander? {}

Forgot to say, facelift grill had brackets missing so there was a huge gap at top where it meets bonnet. Fixed it today though by manufacturing new brackets myself.

Thought they were all like that anyway???  Facelift?

So is your seat dark leather?   And if it was switch, light would not illuminate right? Relay, then passenger seat wouldnt work either hmmn?

isnt electric seat wiring same loom for heat and motion?

I would say he may have possibly had a roof mounted DVD or screen in the back...hence the hole in the headlining. (PS, I have one on EBay at the moment. Genuine Ford DVD and 7" screen as fitted to the Focus CMax and the Fusion!!) The headlinings are easy enough to get second hand are are not too difficult to change. All in all though, not a bad deal.

Mine is an S reg which had 50k on the clock when I bought it. It has had 4 radiators, new alloys, sat nav, DVD, Video TV, Headrest screens, 3 sets of front disks and pads and various other things so even low mileage cars have their problems!!

Hi you've got me on the electrics, Its not something ive had to do on mine yet but should be fairly easy to troubleshoot by using the site and with the help of members who have done it.

The grill is from one of the late model 98 cars and must have been fitted by a previous owner

Yep I have a Black leather drivers seat if you find its the element thats the problem
I'll do you a straight swap if you need it.

LOL no, although I am looking for an electric passenger seat.

I'll swap drivers seats with you if you find thats what the problem is, the seats I have are destined for a speedboat (another story)  ;D

Highlander - Pumice  too :o :o

Now you've progressed to rocking horse pooo! ;)

As for the heated seat not working, check the connections under the seat first, could be he has had it out at some point when fitting DVD system.  I'm pretty sure the heating wiring is a seperate loom, from the movement loom, so might just be needing connected up.

If  that's  the worst of your  problems  then  for a  Grand  you've  done  nae  bad,   reddish brown for the gearbox is OK, start worrying when it's black,  seat heaters are  temperamental  to say the least.   Welcome to the club.
