Title: Re: How easy/difficult is it to....? Post by locky on Dec 17th, 2005, 11:18pm Get the autobox oil and filter done at a specialist. There is no drain plug on the sump, so can be messy. Also they have the right tools / equipment to get all the oil out of the gearbox. Brake discs, are pretty straight forward, although you will need a brake calliper wind back tool for the rears, and a large "G" clamp to push the front calliper piston back in. Wheel bearings, again strightforward enough. hth |

Title: Re: How easy/difficult is it to....? Post by mr._floppy on Dec 18th, 2005, 11:12am The brake disc job is probably the simplest, the wheel bearing job requires an oversized socket for hub nut removal , and some posters have had trouble drifting out the old bearings/oil seal. The gearboxoil change is best left to the garage that is prepared to do it ( some don't ). |

Title: Re: How easy/difficult is it to....? Post by nuttyscorp on Dec 18th, 2005, 11:56am i did my own oil and filter change, quite simple to do, but you will get covered in oil, and i mean covered!, as locky said there is no sump plug for draining on the box. get the parts from ford (they are cheap) apart from the oil. get the correct oil from halfords. total cost for parts incl oil is around £60. should take 2-3 hrs. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/aboxfilters.htm Russ |

Title: Re: How easy/difficult is it to....? Post by Highlander on Dec 18th, 2005, 4:03pm Someone fitted their own sump plug if i remember rightly, might be worth doing mind you it might be a while before the oil needs chandeg again :) |

Title: Re: How easy/difficult is it to....? Post by leftofcentre on Dec 18th, 2005, 7:56pm how long does it take to cahnge each bearing if all goes well? On the repairs section of the main site i see you have to actually remove the carrier and take it to the bench?? Cant the bearings be changed in situ? |
||
Title: Re: How easy/difficult is it to....? Post by mr._floppy on Dec 18th, 2005, 8:12pm Nope , :-[ Two bearings are fitted, and it's impossible to drift them and the oil seals out with the carrier still attached to the hub/axle. |

Title: Re: How easy/difficult is it to....? Post by leftofcentre on Dec 18th, 2005, 10:57pm ok well i am trying to find info on the main site for the procedure of changing front bearings and the tools reqd. No luck tho? Found info on rear bearings but not front. Think i will just get a garage to do it. kind of defeats the object of this site really but there we are. |

Title: Re: How easy/difficult is it to....? Post by howiedintheplace on Dec 19th, 2005, 12:05am Well the fronts can be something you wish you never started due to the large nut that holds the hub on. They can be a nightmare to get off & unless you fancy a challenge I would leave them to a garage. |

Title: Re: How easy/difficult is it to....? Post by Snoopy on Dec 19th, 2005, 7:44am Front wheel bearing is here http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/suspension/FSuspWBearing.pdf the main page is here http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/suspensionman.htm |

Title: Re: How easy/difficult is it to....? Post by martin_rowe on Dec 19th, 2005, 9:16am any garage worth its sorts should do a front wheel bearing inside an hour. |

Title: Re: How easy/difficult is it to....? Post by Thunderchild on Dec 19th, 2005, 10:26am Front wheel bearings can be done but getting the old bearings out can be quite a task if you don't have the right tools. When I did mine I was lucky enough to have access to a hydraulic press and could press the old one out and the new one in. That being said it tooks more than 4 tons per square inch to get the old one out!! As for the site not being much use..... there are people on here who will go out of their way to help anyone and all you have to do is ask. It can't be the fault of the site that you don't have the necessary tools to do any job. Sorry for the rant but these guys are doing a brilliant job for us and all for free!!! Thunderchild |

Title: Re: How easy/difficult is it to....? Post by mr._floppy on Dec 19th, 2005, 4:59pm Well, it's true, there is no practical information on how to replace the front wheel bearings on the site, maybe because , unlike the rears, they tend to last the course and few people have ever needed it done! But a photo article would be handy. |
