Hi folks,
New to these forums so please bear with me

Anyone have any ideas what`s causing this to happen?

I purchased my 97 Scorpio Ultima 2.3 in October of 2003 in a private sale.
At the time her rear boots were a pair of Fulda carat Extremo 225,R50,16`s 92V rated.

Also at the time of purchase i missed the fact that the tyres had worn in the centre of the tread.

These were found to be down to the T.W.I on the centre two treads within a few months with the outsides of the tread still at 4mm.(anyone familiar with this tyre will know they have four sections on the tread pattern).

Replaced them the same make, model of tyre thinking they had been run over inflated. I run them at 29psi.
That was only 8k miles ago,checked this week and found that the same thing has happened to
this pair,only this time N/S was down to T.W.I on centres and 5mm on the outers. O/S was found to be at T.W.I on centres,5mm on inner and 2.5mm outer.
The car was then put on a ramp and bushes,bearings etc, checked and seem to be ok.

Hope this makes sense.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Wearing on the centre of the tread is an indication of OVER INFLATION see this page its near the bottonm of the page http://www.chris-longhurst.com/carbibles/tyre_bible.html

Only one thing it can be is over inflation ???

Are you sure the gauge your checking them with is good.
Some garage forecourt ones are real crap & are way out?

Thanks for the replies guys.

Looks as though i might just have shot myself in the foot on this one.
I managed to get my hands on a Scorpio users guide today and for my 225/50/16 tyres
the guide states 26 psi under normal load and not 29psi as displayed on forecourt charts.

Wouldn`t have thought that 3 psi could have had such a dramatic effect but there you go.

Will run my new tyres at the guide pressure and see what happens.

......just to throw a spanner in the works...... a cab firm i work for used to run scorps as taxis, for 4yrs, and the tyre wear pattern described above was very common, particularly on the rear. i dont have the answer to the question asked, but we went through 200+ scorps in that for year period (each car changed twice yearly), and tyre pressures were checked regularly, due to this problem. our workshop were bemused by the problem too, and tried different makes, with no difference at all.

could it be something to do with a heavy mileage driving pattern, mostly off of the motorway?

a lot of scorps did lose their tyre pressure,particularly the front over say 2/3 weeks, therefore checked weekly, maybe that slow minimal loss of pressure between each week, and then inflation to correct pressure, helped it wear this way eventually?

this problem only occured on the ultimas fitted with 225/50/16's. other models fitted with different tyre size, did not suffer from this problem?

obviously ford reccommend this tyre size, for this model, so it has to be right? our workshop said (in his opinion?) the tyre sizes (225/50/16's) dont seem to work well, with that wheel ( under the scorpios driving characteritics, with heavy non motorway mileage).

like i say, i dont have a definitive answer for you, but you are not alone Andy_G

2/3 psi when cold relates to 5/6 when at operating temperaturs and YES that small difference in pressure can make the difference in the wear pattern.

Tyres should be checked weekly as a minimum and more often if driving large distances .
After all it is the ONLY connection the vehicle has with the road surface.

i'll add my bit. :)

i run with 31 front and 29 rear as i feel the ford data pressure is too soft. car squirms about too much for me at the lower pressures. ;D

interesting thread. i too nearly suffered a heart attack whilst doing my brake change last week to notice the rear 2 tyres completely bald on the inside 1" of the tyres. I was just about to go motorway to london the following day. Needless to say the missus' fiesta came out the garage!!! Do any members run 18s on their ultima?? How do you find tyre wera on these?? 8)

run 17's with 215/45 tyres, & a 50mm drop, it kills the inside, I tend to keep my eye on em & turm them round on the rim as required.

If you lower a Scorpio, carry heavy weights or tow alot etc always keep a eye on the rear tyres as they will wear on the inside as it is to do with how the suspension works on it plus a lot of other Fords.

26psi seems kinda low, 30psi all round does me.

I remove, turn & re fit so the worn side is on the out side, I play with the tracking on the front to even the wear out a bit on the front, (bit extra toe in) & run 36 psi all round
