Title: Petrol smell on starting
Post by brewer on Jan 17th, 2006, 10:33pm
My car is an M-reg cossie. It starts very well but recently I have been able to smell petrol after a cold start. It soon disappears and when the car is restarted but still warm there isn't any  smell. The smell is noticeable from outside the car.
All ideas gratefully received!

I don't think there is a problem, :-/ it's normal  to smell petrol on the exhaust when you've just cold started it. The engine needs a richer mixture  to fire up, it should disappear after a couple of minutes.

No , every now and then there's a strong smell on startup (in the cabin as well as outside) which didn't happen before , it didn't do it today (warm day?)......would you say it's just a build up before the engine fires?

hi there

you shouldn't get any smells. a few things to check are....
exhaust manifold(s), egr pipework, a/c drain pipes for the 1 way valve.

could also be the fuel regulator...http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/fuelrail.htm
