Title: Newbie Question
Post by Steve_Farlow on Jan 25th, 2006, 1:53pm
Hi everyone, I'm a newbie to this forum and I have question regarding a wiring fault on a 1996 2lit Scorpio that I recently purchased.

The dashboard "doors open" display is showing the boot as being continuously open (the internal boot light stays on - flatening the battery!). Also the electric boot release doesn't work. I've checked the wiring at the boot lock (release and lock switch), and there doesn't appear to be any power at either. I've checked the fuses and wiring and the boot hinge (in case of breakage) and there doesn't appear to be anything amiss :(

Can anybody help?

hi there

sounds like 1 of the micro switches is playing up (door ajar).

strip the lock out and check the switch.

When you say you've checked the hinge do you mean the wiring loom in that vicinity?. There have been posts where the loom has been damaged by the hinge moving but you may need to unwrap the loom in that area to expose the actual wires. Just found this which may help http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Advice;action=display;num=1125950554;start=0#0.

Thanks for the info - I removed the micro switch from the actual lock mechanism to check it, but found that there was no current at the switch. There was also no current at the micro switch on the boot release (or to the nearside fog lamp for that matter!!!).

Sorry, yes I did mean the wiring harness at the boot hinge. I think you're right in that I should unravel the wiring harness and check all of the wires inside just to make sure that I haven't missed anything.

Don't forget to let us know what the cause was when you've found it. Good luck.

Well, further investigation at the weekend did not resolve the problem. I managed to sort the fog lamp (broken wiring), but there was no power to either of the boot lock micro switches as far back as the passenger side front door. I think from this that it's safe to assume that the problem is either a fuse or a relay? (I checked both fuse boxes but there was nothing obvious). Does anybody know which fuse/relay covers the boot lock? Is it possible to lift the fuse boxes to check the connections underneath?
As an aside - if you remove and then replace the boot light bulb (It stays on continuously, so I have to remove it to stop it from flattening the battery), then you can hear the release solenoid clicking?

Go to this page, http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/handbook.htm  scroll down to Pages 131 to 135. I think it's relay 12 (pg132) and fuse 22 (Page 131).

Thanks, Now that surprises me as the micro switch wiring runs up the nearside of the car I was expecting the fuse/relay to be in the auxillary fuse box not the main one. Makes me wonder if there's a break in the wiring on the offside of the car that's causing the power failure on the nearside!
