Title: Rear Axle
Post by Steve_Farlow on Feb 2nd, 2006, 9:36am
Hi everyone,

I was wanting to check the fluid level in the rear axle. The manual on the site states 1.3lit Hypoid oil to lower edge of check bore - I'm assuming then that you remove the plug and if oil seeps out then you're OK, else top up with EP90? Or does it take a "special" oil?

Yeah you got it.
Can't remember if it's EP90 but it's the same as most rear wheel drive Fords. Sierra, Granada etc.

Thanks,

Have to admit that I can't remember what type of oil is used, and Ford do seem to have a nasty habit of changing the type on a regular basis! :-/

Well, I had a bash at checking the level at the weekend, but I couldn't get the plug to shift, so I think I may have to pass this one over to my local garage!! :(

In theory as long as the unit isn't leaking then there shouldn't be any need to top it up? Unfortunately the front seal appears to be leaking on mine, so I thought it would be a good idea to check it!
