Title: Starting steeringrack repair
Post by Ford_Sweden on Feb 5th, 2006, 3:11pm
Day one
Its time for some real repairing :-)
Pic 1 (a messy one)
According to the manual here on the site it shouldnt be any problem to take the steeringrack from the car.
But sometimes reality beats the dream.
As shown in pic 1 (red dot) there is some big piece om metalblock sitting where i suppose to take the rack down.
Not giving up! I must unmount the long metalrod that goes between thew two wheelsides Pic 2 (Not know the english word for that). and after some hard words and dirty hands the rack is on the workingtable. Pic 3.
Fast as an fart i took the knife and cut the rubberthing (looks like rubberspring) in two pieces, Wow that was some fluid in that one.
As ive cleaned it up i noticed the little hole in the rod Pic 4 and there was the fluid comming from, right in the rubberthing, Correct me if im wrong, the shouldnt be any fluid in that place or?.
There must me someone in the world that have been trying to repair the rack by them self, but on the internet i cant find ant pic, or exploded view of an steeringrack, so please give me an hint where to look

Peter. you are right about that 'piece of metal'. I had to do as you have and take off the 'anti-roll bar' as the metal plate stops the rack from being removed. I have no idea what it is there for!!.There should not be fluid in the 'gaiters' which is what the rubbery things are called.

Peter,
I seriously advise if you don't know what the hole is for then your  knowledge of steering rack repair is about as limited as mine...and i would not attempt to repair one without getting help or advice from an expert close at hand.Yours and other lives depend on the safety of your vehicle.

Youre right there about the safety to myself and others, But i have repair some steeringracks before but never on Ford, The ones i used to repair was to american cars, and volvo, so thats why im asking these questions.
