Hi,

I've just become the latest victim of the ballooning radiator sydrome. I have read various posts on the forum regarding the cause and the link to the thermostat. I think I can source a new radiator from my local motor factor, but should I be looking to get the standard replacement thermostat? There seems to be a suggestion of fitting one that works at 85 degs. (I'm not sure what the standard one works at).

I would appreciate some advice from anyone who has had this problem. Thanks.

Make sure you get the correct radiator and not a 12v one

and as far as I know is only available from fords in one version. It is a 3 way valve and is totally unique to this engine. It cannot be bought from Halfords or local motor factors and costs around £50.00 for one unit!

Ford finis number is: 7334678

Make sure you change hoses too, I never did and nearly got stranded in Calais when mine burst!

Thanks Baz and Highlander.

I got onto Dagenhams this morning but the parts guy couldnt find a thermostat for a 96 24V cossie without me offering him the Finis no you quoted (7334678) . He said this was a part for a 94 series.

I then called Inchcape Ford and the parts guy there took my reg no. and said the correct Finis for a 96 cossie was 1018215 and they cost £150 + vat. I suggested the other Finis and he, like the other parts guy, said this was for a 94 model.

Any further suggestions? Has anyone else recently replaced their thermostat with either of these Finis numbers??

Tell them to check again using the graphics not find a part.

There is a problem with the system reguarding that number.

1018215 has nothing to do with the stat on a BOB.

It is the correct one that Baz said.

£150 is way too much. They are taking the p*ss out of you.

I bought one last month from Ford Main Dealer for £60 in vat.

Have fun changing it. Allow plenty patience :P

The £150 one is the thermostat housing (thats what they called it when they tried to sell me one) its actually at the top front of the engine where you would normally expect a thermostat.
I had to show the guy on the diagram where the thermostat was :)

As highlander said but nothing to do with the thermostat on a BOB but the thermostat is housed inside that part on a BOA Mk3 engine, all very confusing I know.

OK,

try this. Get the main dealer to enter the number 7334678 into the Mic.rocat search box. http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a369/bazunitec2/Image1.jpg

Then when the search finishes, he will be presented with two options at the bottom of the page. 1 says: Scorpio FE 1994-1998 and the second one says: Granada/Scorpio DE 1992-1994.

Whichever one he clicks on, makes no difference; it still sends him to the first of 2 pages. This first page is the thermostat layout for the BOA engine and at the top of the picture in big red letters it says "-1094" (ie, up to October 1994!) In the top right hand of the page is a blue arrow

click on this arrow and it takes you to the second page which is the BOB engine. The item you want is at the bottom of the page and is item 1.

(please note that I clicked on the Granada/Scorpio listing which is why that is the heading at the top. You see exactly the same pages whichever model is selected. Print this out along with the photo of the stat further up and take them to your dealer. If you look at the bottom of the last but one image above, it has the finis number and the model/year for the car it fits to. If they still insist it isn't the right one, go to a different Ford dealer. Expect to pay no more than £50.00 with the VAT but you may have to wait!

It is a pain when the Ford dealers can't even get it right isn't it!! I got exactly the same answer when I changed mine last year!

By the way, 1018215 is for a water outlet connection for a 1992-1994 Cosworth BOA engine. Someone should show them how to use their bloomin software! and is indeed down at £150+VAT, but is the wrong part!

Thanks everyone for your help. I am sure that I've got the right parts now. I've ordered them online through FordpartsUK.com. They seem to be cheaper than a main Ford dealer, I'm paying £43 for the thermostat and £272 for the rad.

Baz, you never fail to amaze me with your info!!. As this is such a 'difficult' issue for Cosworth owners would it not be a good idea to get Eric to put an 'edited' version of your post on the site under technical or faults so that the authoritative answer is there for all time together with the instruction to the FMD to carry out the search as you indicate in your write up. Seems too good an answer to be 'lost' and it is not as if the problem is unlikely (regretably) to appear again.

Hi!
The partsdealers here in sweden tried to sell me wrong thermostat too! They sayed all scorpios use the same
thermostat!
But it was not theres fault, the resellers had put wrong parts in the partslist
I called 3 of the biggest resellers and they did take it away from the list!
The thermostat can only been buyed from Ford. They will have 700 swk of for
the thermostat! Wery expencive eh :(

Got to agree myself with Simmo / Highlander posts.
