Title: EGR Problems
Post by Steve_Farlow on Feb 13th, 2006, 9:31am
Hi Eveyone,

I'm having problems with an engine misfire and was wondering if there are any EGR experts out there?

The car is a 96 2lit 16v (90K), and has a misfire under light throttle between 30-70mph. Checking the website revealed a couple of possible culprits, namely the wiring loom and the EGR valve.
I checked the loom and was greeted by more copper than insulation, so I cut out the offending cables and rewired to the coil packs/camshaft sensor, but the misfire remained.
Next I removed the vacumn feed to the EGR valve and hey presto - no more misfire. So this weekend I removed the EGR valve and associated pipework to the exhaust manifold (it was slightly loose), cleaned everything, and re-assembled using exhaust putty (just to make sure!), but the misfire still remains (although now its 40-70mph!).

So my questions are these?

1) Am I safe in assuming that as the misfire dissapears when the vacumn feed to the EGR valve is removed, then the leak must be on the "exhaust" side of the valve? (if it was on the "inlet" side of the valve the misfire would be there regardless?). Also as this is the case does that rule out the Oxygen sensors?

2) The 2 rubber hoses that come off of the EGR pipework and go to a pressure transducer? What does this actually do? (Also, why is the main EGR pipe venturied between the 2 smaller pipes?)

3) Does anybody know what the long term implications are of just disconnecting the EGR vacumn feed?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is spoiling what would otherwise be a great car!

Cheers Simmo,

I was using this article as my "blueprint", but it doesn't appear to have worked :(

I'm going to replace the 2 rubber vacuum hoses tonight, just in case one of them has got a split in it!

Thanks Ant,

I had another bash at it on Monday night, replaced the  rubber hoses, cleaned up the pressure transducer etc.... but to no avail, so for mean time I've disconnected it via the vacuum hose. I might have a nother bash at it at a later date, but for the moment I'm afraid that I might just hit it with a larger hammer!  ;D
