Title: Overheating
Post by shaunskiman on Feb 14th, 2006, 6:28pm
Hi People,
I went out in the car this morning driving in to Plymouth 6 miles the temp gauge stayed as always half way up the green normal, Got Plymouth turned off engine returned to car 10 minutes later to return home and on leaving the car park all the way home the needle kept raising up to the red with the fans cutting in. No coolant leaks what I can see, new stat fitted last August ! The above happened last week also but it does not happen every time  ??? also I am not heavy on the pedal.
Any reason this happens, am I looking at yet another rad blowing  :-/
Cheers Shaun I...

Is it actually overheating or is it just the needle?

Mine takes a funny turn every now and again and moves in and out the blue/cold but i think its just the sender rather than the thermostat as it does it very quickly, been like that for over a year with no problems

Hello Highlander,
The engine does'nt overheat just as the fans cut in to bring the needle back down again but as soon as I'am in traffic moving slowly the needle's back up to the top with the fans cutting in again  ???
Cheers Shaun I....

Yep but is it actually the water getting hot or just the gauge showing its getting hot even though it might not be?

Possibly an air lock? Water level might appear ok but actually be up and down.

To check whether the gauge is at fault press and hold the toggle on the dash (below the dials) to enter diagnostic mode. The engine temperature will be shown there. This uses a different sensor than the one from the gauge.

Also check that both sensor plugs are connected securely. The one for the gauge is a bit weedy and mine did break (with help from someones elbow ;D)
