Ok,trying to change the Cats,bloody Manifold bolts aren't moving on my old ones,tried soaking them for three days in 'Freeway' which we use on our aircraft at work for stubborn bolts,no joy,what access I have I've tried to use the blowtorch,not a sausage,anyone any other ideas before I get a lump hammer to the car?

Could you cut them off with a grinder mate? Can't say I have done this job so don't know what the access is like, but bet it isn't great  :-/

Failing that Stuarts suggestion is sound  ;D

I've recently had this problem myself, so I know exactly how you feel.

It may seem like a cop-out taking it to KwikFit or similar, but once you're into it yourself, its past the point of no return. If I'd had the chance, I think I'd have done the same.

But anyway, if you're doing it yourself, there's very little space to work (as you know) and certainly no room for a grinder. But here's how I did mine...

From inside the engine bay, I reached down with a junior hacksaw and cut down the side of the nut.

Now, the other two underneath, they can't be reached with the trusty hacksaw, so I used a 1/8" drill to drill up into the flat of the nut beside the thread. Then I tried the socket & extension again. This time it moved due to it being weakened.

By the way, the new nuts that go back on here look quite strange.

They're a copper kind of effort and with the threaded area slightly tapered.

By that I mean that half of it is almost oval shaped.
If you look down the thread, the first bit that threads on is round, but it gradually tapers.
So they're pretty much a lock nut.

No wonder they don't wanna come off!  


And don't panic, these nuts and new studs if necessary, are readily available from Ford.

Indeed,    let  the lads   from   Kwik-Fit   get  skinned   knuckles  and  back strain,  that's what  they're   paid   for ::)


    BTW,  I think I've worked out the  mystery  of the asterisked thread title,  is it  "Flaking  Cat  Removal" ?         :P

The only way I got mine off was to heat them to red hot with an acetylene torch... not easy given the space but I bet that's what the old Kwik Fit boys do. Then it's a long extension from underneath and a lot of muscle!! Good luck.

always found the colder the better for cracking the nuts the nearside cats easier for access half inch extension on wobblehead and a good breaker bar will move em, nearly every time i`ve done this studs free from flanges,or nut comes off cross threaded like paul b said threads are tapered its a locking nut. if exhaust manifold studs suffer and you need to free them from engine its a doddle, stainless nuts come off quite easy nearside manifold comes off a piece of cake offsides a bit tighter but will drop through where cat sits,can`t remember if i had to take off oil filter though. incidentally i`ve got a spare offside manifold in good condition if you or anyone else requires one.
