Title: Cold start problem
Post by bhimself on Feb 21st, 2006, 8:38am
Hi there, Im a new member here and also a new Scorpio owner.  Im really pleased with it too, its such a pleasure to drive any distance.  I have an initial problem though.. Its a 12v V6 Ultima Estate.  I just had a full service and I fitted a new battery cover and a new altenator as the mechanic pointed out mine was faulty.  The problem is only when the engine is very cold.  It will start fine, then as soon as I drive off the revs drop and it stalls.  it then restarts ok, but only after turning over for quite a few times. I get round this problem by just sitting with the engine running for a few minutes, but i would like to get it sorted.  Could anyone give me an idea as to what to do? Im not a mechanic but a musician so please be gentle with me..!  Perhaps someone would be kind enough to give me a check-list of things to do, starting with the easiest!! Thanks so much everyone. :)

Welcome. The first place to look for any problem is in 'Fault Finder' which is on the front page here http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/.  If you are in the forums page go to the FORD SCORPIO banner at the top of the page, click and it will return you to Home page. If you scroll to the bottom of that page you can enter a topic in the search box and you'll be amazed at the response!!.

Does sound like an IACV problem the from  symptoms you describe.

Thanks for the help.  I took off the IACV unit, but I couldnt seperate the parts of the unit itself because the screws were so corroded.  Anyway, I sprayed carb cleaner inside and then blew an air hose through it to clean.  It looks clean now, although i cant really tell exactly how clean as I cant see completely inside.  Maybe I should buy a second hand one, clean it and put it on.   I suppose Im gonna have to clean this MAFF thing too?  Anything else while Ive got my hands dirty?!

Have you found the link to clean the MAF?. DO NOT try to touch the tiny filament type electrodes in the unit but simply spray with carb cleaner until they are clean. The MAF does have a significant effect on the running of the vehicle.

Dont bother trying to find and clean the MAF. The 12V 2.9 doesn't have one.
