Title: exhaust sytem problem
Post by sterio on Feb 25th, 2006, 4:49pm
I have a 16V 2,0 engine.

I wa under the car today and found out that rust/corrosion has made some damage on it.
But I dont know what parts of the system it is and how it is effecting it?

First question, is the catalysator the first box after the engine that goes down in the front part of the car?
That box goes down and then back, and it has some kinfd of cover that has corroded and is loose.

The second problem is the box under the middle of the car. In front of the two side by side boxes.
That box has also a methallic cover that forms it round but it has also corroded so it hangs loose on just one side.

Everything works ok, but how will this effect the car and what to do? Is this boxes the cat?

Im thinking of fastening the cover with a methall starp so it will cover the box. The loose cover in the front could that just be a heating sheald?

Thanks
Sorry for my bad English (from Sweden)
Dave

Hi Dave,

You are correct, the first box is the catalytic convertor, the two middle boxes are silencers (or mufflers).

The plates that cover them are heat shields, to prevent fires if you park over something combustible - the cat gets exceptionally hot.

I don't foresee a problem as long as they are not to badly corroded and are refixed in the correct position. If they are badly corroded, then it would be wise to replace them.

Thanks!!!!!

Is the box in front of the two side by side boxes also a muffler?

Thats the one with the biggest corrosion and that ones cover is totally loose on one side and is hanging under the car. I will try to mount the hanging cover by some straps!

Thanks
Dave

Dave,

have had a look at this:

and the box before the 2 rear mufflers does look like a silencer.

The Cat  is  below  the exhaust manifold,  the boxes  to the rear of the flexible  joint  are silencers.

   I've been quoted  £500 GBP   for a   2Lt  16V   complete  fitted system  ( Minus Cat ).
