having said that, ive had access to a few scorps over the years, most have a completely red key, however, mine is a '98, with the red square in the corner of the key too!

i do not have a completely red key for this car, so, i think, your seller was not "telling porkies", he is correct!

it is the red key! you MAY well be safe in disconect/reconnecting the battery, on a '98 model, i dont know if anything was changed, but my batterys been out several times for moving another scorp, and the only thing i needed to do was re-enter the radio code.

I have recently had my battery changed, for the same problems, I don't have a red key either and all I had to do was enter the radio code

Yes it did, but make sure you get the right battery (650 CCA & 71Ah) due to all the toys, cost was £60 with a 3 year warantee, have a read of the thread: -

I recently bought mine from a local battery store and the biggest they have is 570CCA :/ (The former one is 470CCA when I aquired the vehicle a week ago!!!!)

Also from what I gathered now that my car isn't starting anymore is because I disconnected the battery for too long (more than half an hour ) which results the PATS lost *something (Flash memory?)* and not reconising my black key. - Center LED rapidly flashes
The garage said the red key is required to start and reprograme the other keys but which I haven't got.

I am awaiting a callback from them or Ford for a price quote.

Perhaps the rule of thumb when you replace your batttery is make sure you complete it as quickly as possible!!!

Just my two cents!

That's not normal either. (Not that there is a "normal" with Scorpios)

I've had my battery out for almost a week, on charge, then waiting for a dry day to replace it.  Refitted it this morning and it started first time. Just needed to input the radio code.

The red key is the master key used for reprogramming replacement keys from Ford. When new (as far as im aware with the Scorpio when it was new) they should come with 3 keys. 1 will be the red master key, 1 plain black with the red dot in its top and the third will be either another plain black one or one of the old type with the small torch in it. If you have remote locking fitted then this will come with the seperate plip. Ive not had many dealings with the Ford PATS system but it can be overridden if replacement master keys are not available or are too expensive but then you have no immobiliser. Best bet is to have a chat with your local Ford dealer but take a chair to sit on and brace yourself.......

Thats strange, a week?? Did you use your black key to start the car up after you refitted your battery?

If that is the case I have no idea why mine stopped reconising my black key!

bootiful-scorpios, I am afraid I contacted them and the garage said they only have the black key.

By the way my remote works fine, it just wont start.

Hi Celesa,

Yes, just the normal black key. It's not the first time either. As far as I'm  aware, there is no time limit when the battery is removed.
