Mick

First of all welcome.

Hopefully you will find what you need on the site, but here are some questions to get things rolling.

When you turned the key did the starter motor turn the engine over or did you hear any clicking noises?

When the AA man jump started the car did the engine turnover or was it just nothing happening at all?

Do any of the other electrical items work, interior lights, hazards, headlamps etc.,?

If not is the red lLED on top of the dash flashing, if so what frequency of flashes?

Do you have a cover over the battery and were the fusebox covers solidly in place?

Options include, battery, Ignition switch, PATS or cabling based problems, others may have additional thoughts.

Geoff

Mick,

Click from starter could mean not enough power from battery, but I suspect not as simple as that (hope I am wrong)

You said LED not flashing, sounds like it might be a PATS problem.

Do you have a spare key?  If so try that, it may be that the chip in the key that you used yesterday has failed.

However the red LED should be flashing when the key is out also as an indicator that the system is armed, if it is not doing that then the problem may be in the PATS system itself.  Typically beyond fuses or relays this is not a DIY item and you may have to get the dealer involved. To see if WDS can interrogate and spot the fault. I don't think OBD will be any good but am open to correction.

Have a look at this http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/pats.htm

And I guess you will already have looked at this

Good luck and keep us informed about what happens.

hi there

WHILE STANDING ON THE BRAKES, try starting in every gear posittion.

have you checked both fuseboxes for dampness? is the battery 100%? parts of the electronics will shut down with low volttages.

Try looking at the main link fuses in the auxillary fuse box they are big ones 60 and 80 amp but if they have blown you need to know the cause.

Ignition Switch faulty?

Fairly sure that the problem has to be either a faulty solenoid switch or the connection from the battery to the starter motor. The fact that there is a click from the solenoid means that all of the PATs etc are correct. Sometimes the contacts on the solenoid switch get coated by the arcing as they make contact and eventually are no longer conductive. Probably means a replacement starter motor as the solenoid is integrated into the starter. As a last resort check out the alternator as they can cause all sorts of strange problems if they fail.

I would also have a very close look at the earth points in the engine bay. There are 2 near the battery shelf, and I *THINK* there is another near the starter at least. You could carefully try a jump lead from the engine block to a part of the car body.

Good luck  :)
