Title: Mines a bit stiff (gear shift that is)
Post by cossie_al on Mar 22nd, 2006, 10:24pm
Okay the wifes learning to drive so I have to sit in with her in the tin box she lovingly refers to as a pug 206.
So I didnt drive the scorp for a week or so and the gear shift has become quite stiff. All seemed fine beforehand

When you put it in park and try to start it, you have to give the gear stick a good shove forwards first and it is the same at the other end it feels a bit springy if you try to get first gear
I am hoping there is an external gear linkage that needs cleaning and lubed please please tell me this is the case or if my box is broken let me know gently }{

Theres a pivot for the linkage rods which is bolted to the side of the box thats bad for seizing up,
i bought a 24v that had the pivot actually broken, the car had sat a few months, then moved through the gears and it snapped, only made of cast..
its on the near side of the box, halfway up, you can get to it from below

Same here, mine was sat for nearly 4 months, gear selector not moved for about the last 6 weeks of that and it had stuck solid. Be prepared to really give it a good dousing with WD40, 3 in 1 oil, penetrating spray, and not necessarily in that order  ;)

Also it may not move immediately. I gave it a good oiling but it still wouldn't move. Came back an hour later and it was a bit better. Gave it another oiling, came back 2 hours later and it would just about move out of Park. Gave it another doing and left it overnight and it was better than it has ever been!  8)

As Highlander says the linkage is not made of thick metal so go easy on it, it is much easier to lubricate now than to replace if it breaks!

Dave/Highlander. Does the link I put up show the linkage you are referring to?. I have a feeling there's another one but can't find it.

Yes mate it does. From the page you have posted, click on the last link "Transmission Range Sensor".

On the pdf that opens the relevant bits that need oiling/attentions are the pivots shown in point 7, 9 and 10.

Cheers

Well what was it my grandmother used to say a stitch in time save nine ??? ??? ???
how about a squirt in time saves a broken gear linkage and makes for a nice slick gear shift.
Thanks again guys for your help

In the short time I have had the privaledge (if that how you spell it) ???of being a member of the site the info has saved me many beer tokens and Im am more than greatfull.
Its all to easy to become fed up and think of selling the scorp down the road when you have these sort of probs and when your mot man says your cats are broken etc.
But then a few posts on the site and you realise that other folks are more than willing to help and your mind kind of changes round to okay I can get over this problem also.
so thanks not only for solving this particular problem but for reinstating my faith in a car that I do actualy enjoy. ;D ;D
