Title: ABS playing up
Post by Butterfingers on Mar 28th, 2006, 11:42am
On two separate ocassions now, I've had the ABS light come on and then on start up behave normally. The first time I was stuck in traffic and it appeared, but after turning the engine off for 15 mins it behaved normally. And again yesterday it came on as I was pulling off and then this morning its behaving like nothings happended.

Anyone else had this? It sound more like a loose connection to the modulator or a dirty sensor perhaps. Also it was not raining.

Thanks.

Thanks, I've already read  that, it doesn't cover what I've described.

Discs and pads renewed in January, tyre pressures around 35 pSi, and no squeaks from the bearings. But no sign of it playing up today ???

Favourite is a wheel sensor or wiring - mine just started to play up again on the Rover 820 (hasn't happened since last summer) - it seemed to be worse with heat and damp to the point that driving through a small puddle on a moderately warm day was enough to cause it to happen.  Seems to have cursed every 800 I've known...

I'm not sure about the Ford ABS system but the Bosch ABS used on the Rovers was very easy to diagnose; you just shorted two wires out on a multiplug and counted the number of flashes from the ABS warning light.  Don't know if you can do the same with the Ford system but you can manually check each sensor using a digital multimeter set to AC millivolt range.  Disconnect each wheel sensor and attach the meter probes to the sensor wiring.  With the wheel stopped you should get no voltage reading.  Spin the wheel and you should get a definite (though low) voltage reading if the sensor is working.

I had this problem on my previous '95 Scorpio. In wet weather the ABS light would come on & when trying the brakes I had no ABS (wheels locking). It turned out to be a loose connection on the n/s/f/wheel !!
