My 24v seems to drop 3 cylinders out and will hardly pull away when I select reverse. (only from a cold start), but as soon as you put in D it pulls away fine ???????

Hi Dave,

welcome to the site :D

I reckon you have hit the nail on the head when you say it seems to drop to 3 cylinders. I don't think it actually does, more likely the gearbox fluid is low. My car has done this on a couple of occasions when the fluid has needed topping up; it rumbles and shakes and doesn't really move - yes?

Failing that consider a gearbox fluid and filter change as the filter can become blocked over time.

Hi Dave, thanx for the reply, I am actually recently retired from an auto gearbox business, and I know what you mean, but my fluid level is spot on and transmission is perfect. This is a definite electrical problem, but it only does it once in a while, its like some sort of feedback from the reverse circuit that cuts out half of the ignition coils but because its only done it 3 times in the last 3 weeks I cant get to grips with it. As soon as you select D it pulls away like a train, drives faultlessly otherwise and has only ever done it cold. The car had a full service when I bought it 3 weeks ago including plugs, and I serviced it myself so I know it was done right !!! All genuine ford bits too. Its a real mystery, but when i suss it out Ill post the results, I have just come back from a weekend away and the car didnt do it once !!!

Odd! Do you have to reverse out of your driveway? If so could you try parking facing outwards then see if it happens when you put it into Drive too? If not maybe it is something to do with the reverse lights circuit? ???

Yep, I definitely think its to do with reverse lights / dipping mirror circuit, but I will try leaving it reversed into my drive so I can eliminate it doing it in D! when it did it last friday, as i took it out of reverse the engine smoothed out, then i put it back in and it missed again this happened 2 or 3 times, finally it crept off the drive then in D it pulled away fine and at the top of our road (50 yards) it went backwards fine . The car has parking sensors as well !!

Yeah, try reversing into the drive. If that doesn't work then maybe try disconnecting the reverse sensors/mirror/lights in turn to see if that cancels the symptom. Do the sensors/mirror/reverse lights all work ok?

Yes all electrics seem fine. I'll try plugging my scanner into it to watch the live data from cold starts, there are no current trouble codes, but if I cant see anything there I'll try unplugging things in turn. The trouble is because its so very intermittant I will probably have to wait until something fails completely before I get to find the problem LOL
