Title: Squealing again!
Post by Wafoo on Apr 4th, 2006, 11:11am
Can anyone point me in the right direction with this problem of mine,Been ongoing for months, when I start the car squeals horrendously for abour 1-2 mins, sometimes only a few seconds but rarely, changed the belt before Christmas, seemed OK for a while now it's back again, changed the alternator, tensioner, tried squirting WD40 on everytrhing and running it,but after a while it goes so still stuck, sounds like the belt but it's only 5 months old.

Water pump? Mine is getting replaced today. Started off with the odd squeel and would come and go, now its pretty much all the time. It sits on the right hand side above the AC pump. My tensioner had also went a few weeks ago, but that was another kind of squeel, mostly me as it happend on the M1 at the time ;D

Still having trouble wafoo.
Could be the water pump but try cleaning the belt now with some kind of degreaser.
Also are you sure you have the correct belt fitted?
Did you try squirting WD just on the belt first?

Yeah tried squirting, nothing, also notice when it's squealing the alternator voltage drops to about 12v,once it stops back up to 13.8,now that makes me think fanbelt????
The fanbelt came from halfords, they say it's the correct one but??????

Does the V patten of the belt match the pulleys + does the tensioner sit in the mid position so it can travel either way & not hit the stop?

Hmmm, the v belt matches the pulleys, have to have a look at the tensioner setup, cheers

Just a quickie(ooo err missus) does anyone know the part number of the drive belt for a 1998 24v cosworth, tried ford and they couldn't get it,some sort of new computer glitch!,it looks like the wrong ones fitted, seems to be at the end of the tensioner movement!

Halfords hmmmm was right!!!
Got another drive belt from my local car spares place, same part number but ones Motoquip the other was  some other, there's about 2cm difference in length, put it on,not a sound!!!!
Thanks everyone, just goes to show you should always check the obvious but I was assuming the right parts had been supplied!
Oh well, back to enjoying the car again.

:-[ Had the same problem, squeeled when cold then went away, thought it was a belt, in fact the crank pully centre came away from the outer, it is embossed or moulded some how to the outer and this failed. Lucky for me I was pulling into a petrol station and was only idling at the time so no damage, just a new pully (£120 from Fords)  :-/

I personally don't trust, nor go to, Halfords any more. When I had my 12V estate, EVERY part I bought from them was wrong; including the air filter and oil filter. I now use my local independant dealer.
