hi mike

the first one is about the egr system. a blockage in one of the pipes that the 2 hoses go on to. :-/

do you have 2nd gear? try using the snow* button to force it to use 2nd. i think 2nd and reverse are the same gear. :-/ have you checked the usual things? level when hot, etc.

it's the 2 pipes on the manifold pipe thing. not much of a worry compered to the gearbox one. did you check in the enhanced bit on VE for codes?

Hi,

a few people recently been talking about box replacement, see my postings this week. mine went after £3k of "my" miles >:(

i picked up a 2nd hand box from someone on here for £100, and fitting is about £200, so not too bad, considering rebuild is £800 odd plus fitting !! depends if you are a gambling man......

Have you had any symptoms of impending gearbox doom or did it just go bang? It seems that a bit of notice is usually given at least!

was very quick, within 100 miles it went from "fine" to "not engaging drive", im not an expert (new to fords) so couldnt comment in general im afraid

Have you ruled out electrical problems? See if the reverse lights come on when you put it in reverse - could be something as simple as a failed switch...

If they do come on then you'll need to remove the gearbox sump and check for voltage at the reverse solenoid (ignition on, selector in reverse, engine stopped).

The other thing you might want to check is the brake bands. Try adjusting them - if they're fine they won't need adjusting much but if one broke then you'll notice when you try to torque them.

Personally I think the problem will be electrical as the ECU can sense open/short circuits, etc. but it would be much harder for it to register a mechanical failure.

What about the selector arm? Does the gearbox lock in park?

I've not worked on one those gearboxes, but I don't think it would stay in gear if the solenoid failed. Basically it's a solenoid operated hydraulic valve (not unlike those on an ABS system) - if the solenoid suddenly fails a spring should return the armature to the 'off' position. This could cut hydraulic pressure to one of the clutch or brake band pistons and therefore you'd lose reverse even whilst moving.

Having an error indicating maximum RPM would suggest a problem with the crank sensor or wiring. Because you're getting several spurious errors I would definitely check the whole length of the loom within the engine bay. If the loom appears to be okay then you'll need to check the gearbox solenoids for continuity.

leave the battery off for 1/2 a hour, then try it. ???

According to the PDF on the website about gearbox overhaul you should be able to see/remove the solenoids once the sump is off.

As I'm sure you already know, the multi-plate clutches inside the gearbox are operated by hydraulic pistons - really they are nothing more than an end plate with an inner and outer oil seal which fits at one end of the clutch. It's possible that one of the seals has failed so hydraulic pressure is leaking past them and the clutch not being operated.

The other thing is that the brake bands are also operated by pistons (via levers) - though these are the more conventional type and you can see two of them on the side of the gearbox - the third is underneath and accessible with the sump removed. Again, if the seals in these have perished then their respective brake band won't be applied with full pressure.

However, I wouldn't expect failed oil seals to have given the symptom you had when it broke - if anything I'd expect them to be responsible for slow changes or engagement (less when oil is cold and thick), and getting progressively worse over time. Either way, I think you're not going to get much further without dropping the sump...
