Title: Keys
Post by Vince on Apr 7th, 2006, 9:35pm
Hello, I have been lurking  here for a while as I have been looking for a Scorpio. Good work fellas!

I saw a very clean R reg 2.3 Ultima last week and I am thinking about buying it but there are a few points you all might be able to help me with

Firstly, the remote control does not work, and there is only one key (which is black). Reading p36 of the owner's handbook on this site it seems likely that the remote control needs reprogramming. Would I need a master key to do that?  I understand that the late Scorpios did not have a red key. What should my best course of action be?

Secondly it has a low recorded mileage but no history. I'm sure I have read somewhere that Scorpios cannot be clocked but my tame mechanic tells me that any car can be clocked. Yay or nay?

Thirdly in view of the lack of history I would want to get it serviced asap. How much is a major service likely to cost at Ford?

Thanks for any help, I have loved Scorpios since I first saw one, I am thrilled that their price have now dropped to the point where I can afford one.....

Thanks for any advice and I'm sure I'll be back to ask some more.

Vince, Firstly welcome to the site. As for the remote that could be something as simple as batteries. Secondly as for as service I guess the answer is 'how long is a piece of string'!!! particularly as you have no service record to start from. Is the car from a dealer or private?. Is it manual or Auto?. As for the 'clocking' aspect I believe there is a way of 'interrogating' the memory but no doubt one of the senior lads will know more. Where is the car being sold? as it may be that someone on here knows of it?.

Hi Simmo and thanks for the welcome.

The car is an automatic- the transmission fluid is good though, I have looked at around a dozen auto Scorpios now and it has the cleanest reddest fluid out of all that I have seen.

The car is being sold by a dealer and has a 6 month warranty (although I don't really have a great deal of faith in dealer warranties) and I am happy with the price and condition and it seems to have been well maintained but I would be planning to own the car for some time so I would like to start off by getting the car fully serviced by my own garage.

I am going to take another look today but I do like the car and unless the lack of a full set of keys is likely to be a problem I think I am going to put in an offer.....

It is possible to get another RED Key from either FMD ( Expensive) or a local auto locksmith. In fact there is one member here in Luton who has the equipment and will give you a small discount Locksmiths  HERE (http://www.home-own.co.uk/ala/)

A service with a FMD is likely to be in the region of £200/300 but you will find most people on her either do there own or get a GOOD local garage to carry oput this work. Ther is NO advantage in having the work done by a FMD as the car no longer has any dealer warranty which is why most people go that route. There are NOT a lot of serviceable items on the scorpio, really plugs, leads, filters are all about all you can you THE EEC is A NON SERVICEABLE item unless you have a WDS 2000. and at £6/7K  leave that one alone.

There is a diagnostice service you can run yourself if you want which is the OBDII and a lot of members use that.

As the car is now over 10 years  old since production started it is classed as old by the dealerships.
Reprogramming the remote is not a problem the method on the site work and is as used by the dealers.
Give the aar a good drive and get it all up to working temps and look at everything go through the check list on the site.

ALL the information on the main site has been provided by FORD (Europe) along with the necessary permissions for us to use it so it is ALL as the dealership would have, In fact in some cases MORE. It has not been know for a dealer to ask a question on here in the past.

Good Luck.

To add to Snoopys comments about FMD. I collected an ignition barrel kit yesterday and the lad said "Are you going to do that yoursef ?? :o". I said "Well i've done a door lock so I'm sure this will be similar " He said, "We haven't got anyone here in 'parts' who knows how to do that !" I told him to go and look up this site and the pictures on how to do it!!. He did read the key for me though!. This page about servicing may help.http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/diy.htm.  Good luck.
