When I Bought my Scorpio the previous owner had been using the car with the auto function left permanently on, the mirror does not work. I am in the process of buying another Scorp now, and during the test ride I made a point of checking out the mirror which was in perfect condition and works as it should. This owner, however, didn't keep the mirror switched to auto as a matter of course.

I have been wondering if there a correlation between mirror life expectancy and leaving the thing switched on/off. Any thoughts?

Liquid crystal has a definate life span and depends on the maufacturer. You can see this on high use items like home wireless phones etc, where many fail within 2 - 3 years or so as they are constantly powerd. As with anything though, they can just fail prematurley but leaving them powerd up all the time while on the drive will shorten the life of the thing. I tend only to use it when needed, never found that much use for it when about town and pretty much only switch it on when I am on the motorway.

Mine is permanently switched on and when I bought the car, it was switched on so I presume it has always been on in it's 8 years. However, in recent weeks, I've noticed an area around the outer edge of the glass where the glass isn't darkening at all. So I'm presuming the mirror is beginning to fail.
Maybe I will start switching it off when driving during the day so try conserve what's left of it.

As long as it doesn't decide to drip all over the gear selector area, I'll be happy!!!
