Title: coolant loss
Post by trogg on Apr 11th, 2006, 8:13pm
i am having trouble with coolant escaping out of the expansion tank overflow. i am having to top up from the minimum mark every two weeks. is this extra pressurew in the system a sign of the head gasket failing.

Would suggest either pressure valve in the cap, or the cap seal. Worth trying a new reservoir cap, just put a new one on mine for a similar problem.

Have you recently had to add a lot of water to the cooling system?  If so you may just have air in it.  If you haven't then it could be the head gasket(s) but look for other evidence first.

If you think this may be the case then: with the engine cold, top up to the maximum mark (squeezing hoses gently), fit the cap loosely (just enough to prevent hot coolant being showered everywhere, but not air-tight) and start the engine.  Leave engine idling and allow it to warm up to normal temperature.  The coolant level will rise but should not overflow.  When the cooling fan has cut in and out, stop the engine and allow to cool.  Top up if needed then tighten cap.

Coolant should not overflow from the tank, even with the cap left off (that's why they call it an expansion tank!) unless it has been overfilled or is being 'bubbled out' by air trapped in the system.

If it isn't the head gasket, it sounds like to much pressure due to a blocked or restricted flow of water somewhere in the cooling system

i didnt think it was head gasket because i checked for other  sighns today. no oil mulsification. i think you are right about water flow. i think ill change the coolant and flush the system.

I did have exactly the same problem with my car!
It was an waterleak under the inlet, The rubber hose
who goes from the thermostat up on top on engine did leak under the inlet!

Regards Kjell.
