Title: Autobox oil level
Post by proberjohn on Apr 11th, 2006, 8:22pm
When I go to check the autobox oil level - hot, engine running, cycle though the selector positions three time, etc - on first pulling the dipstick it shows less than max., but if I wipe it, replace it and pull it again it shows at max.  Anyone else get this??  Is it at max?  Why the false level after putting the dipstick back in again????

Because moving it through all gear positions a few times fills the hydraulic servos.  The level will rise slowly when you return it to neutral or park as the servos begin to empty back into the sump.

I'd suggest somebody sits in the car and keeps moving the selector stick into the gear positions (handbrake on, wheels chocked/raised and engine at idle of course!) whilst you check the level - as long as it doesn't fall below minimum it should be okay, if it does then changes might be sluggish.

I'd considered that and I'll give it a try but the time between the first and subsequent check is only seconds and doesn't seem to be enough to let the oil drain down again :(

I don't recommend anyone  standing in front of a running  car,  dipstick in hand ,   while  someone   waggles  the  selector  lever !!!!!!  :'( :'( :'(

Ignore   the   first  reading,  after  you've wiped  the dipstick  clean,   the second  is  the  more  accurate.
