I have been doing some preventative rustproofing today. In my experience, this pays dividends.

I have also been examining existing corrosion.

Already, there are some scabby bits on the NS rear wheelarch despite the car being only 8 years old.

I had a good old poke about at one scab, and it's only surface rust so I have cleaned it back to good metal then Kurusted it. I'll re-do it tomorrow, then put some paint on.

What is the cause of this rusting, which seems a little premature? Is the paint weak, for example? My E-reg Sierra has better wheelarches......Would the scabs have been prevented by more regular waxing by previous owners?

Also I saw today that HALFORDS sell 3-pen touch up paint kits in (supposedly) the right colour (Panther Black).

Do Ford sell the same sort of thing, and is it any better if they do?

Mine are the same but I have done a bit of prvention too. I also managed to get a set of Genuine Ford wheelarchs for when they really go bad!!

It is because the metal is folded over a few times and as such is a natural water trap and not much can be done about it. It is a throwback to the granadas I'm afraid

Mine was starting to do that too!! It was a 98 car :o.

My wife demolished the boot lid once and I got it replaced by a 96 boot lid, the 96 lid had loads more paint on it, it was thick with paint in comparison, my original had hardly any on the inside, looked like ford was saving cash running up to the end of production, I supposed they thought this car was costing them to much as it was. My original boot lid was starting to rust too and the 96 one, which was lying outside for at least a year, was spotless.

The later models didn’t get the same amount of paint as the previous years got, probably left them slightly easier on fuel. ;D

Can’t you remove the arch protectors and using a finger or similar fill the seam with silicone sealant (once the water has dried out)??? It worked on the old Clio I had
