Title: cleaning the engine
Post by Butterfingers on Apr 17th, 2006, 9:07pm
Anybody recently steam cleaned their engine sucessfully without experiencing gremlins? I'm tempted to do it but too scared. The 2.3 engines look abit naff compared to the Cosworth so I just want to make my 2.3 look a bit nicer.

From posts I have read previously I would not do it.
Personally I would spend time cleaning by hand now rather than chacing faults later.

I guess it goes something like this. If your car is in really good condition and all the wiring connections are first class and your loom is perfect then go ahead.

Actually this is a version of the Dirty Harry Magnum speech... and the answer is Nooooooooo!

Having been absolutely stunned by the spotless condition of Snoopy's 12 valve V6 at Derby in 2004, he shared the secret, paintbrush and Paraffin and a lot of rags to scrub of afterwards.

Hope that helps ;)

Oh and Richard Griffin told me about some sort of chemical salts that are really great for getting the alloy corrosion of the head on a 4 cylinder. Problem is I forgot, but hope to ask him at Harewood :)

Paraffin & toothbrushes & old ripped up clothes
Used for over 35 yrs & no probs. on cars motorbikes & anything with an engine.
Old fashioned but beats the cr*p out of all the wonder products on sale at premium margins.
Needs a bit more manual input than squirt on / hose off which is easier in the short term.

I've got a new 2.3 engine in my Ultima (36,000 miles). The head looks great, (it looks like it's been hammerited)..
You could paint the top of the engine with a temperature paint & it wouldn't look so mottled

I jet wash my cosworth engine and have done for over 30,000 miles with no ill effects. I did my old red one for the same kind of mileage too. Depends where you jet it and wether you take time wiping down afterwards
