Title: Buy a new ABS Module £964?
Post by johndyork on Apr 19th, 2006, 12:40am
Fellow Scorpions,

ABS light  been on for ages - passes initial startup tests & then comes on after about 30 secs/10mph etc.  Only after reading helpful posts did I realise why it passed the MOT test recently (not driven above 3mph - or whatever limit is - so light didn't come on - thought I had been blessed by the Scorpio God with a miracle cure - no such luck, light still on as reliably as Volvo sidelights!)

Was having AC regassed today so asked Ford to have a look and their diagnostic was (which cost additional £50):

"Investigated ABS light on all the time.  Carried out FDS self test and FDS diagnostic.  Suspect ABS module fault; cleared DTCs.  Carried out road test and rechecked.  Requires new ABS module £964 inc VAT"

Now feeling worried and know I need to sort it somehow.  Not sure what all this means & would be very grateful for any comments on the diagnostic.  I did check across sensors with a meter & all equal.  I will remove and clean all sensors, recheck all connectors etc - but will this be in vain.  Any help appreciated.

Regards, johndyork

I'd certainly not go to a Ford Dealer for a new one at that price! I'm sure there are plenty being broken for spares and they don't fail very often and so I'd pick up a secondhand one for a lot less than that and try that rather than entrust it to the FMD. If you do want a new one then talk to Trevor at http://www.fordpartsuk.com

Are they absolutly sure its the module and not just a wheel sensor, Mine doen the same thing 30secs and the light would come on, it was the nearside front wheel sensor. Ford broke that for me when they where changing the bearing and said nothing untill I pointed it out.

Had this on ours about 6 months ago, went through all the sensor checks/cleaning and still came up. Found a local guy who had diagnostic set up - charged about £35 and came up with same result.

Managed to get hold of one from on here and fitted it myself - a bit fiddly but did it in a morning. Sorted.

Believe you need to get correct one, depending if you have tcs or not - perhaps someone can clarify.

Hi - thanks for replies guys.  Just been to FMD to get some details - part cost £764 incl vat.  Part nos:
Ford Finis: 1013728
Part id: 95GB-2C013-AA
(apparently the 2nd to last letter needs to be an 'A' as the car doesn't have TCS - last letter doesn't matter)
Car = N reg, 1996, 2.9 12v  (no traction control system)

Would appreciate advice on:
a) Is the ABS module also known as the Controller?
b) If I get a part is it straightforward to fit (would willingly do a set of photos & instructions for the site)
c) Does the part have to come as a unit with the pump or can the module bit be bought/fitted on its own
d) Is there any hydraulic work involved
e) Given no TCS, is the part the same across the model range?
Thanks again.  johndyork

How did you check the sensors?  If it was just a resistance test then this isn't enough.  I doubt the ABS electronics other than sensors would be at fault (though it'd be much easier if it were), so if you're certain the sensors are okay then it'll probably be a fault with the modulator/pump assembly - and for that it does involve hydraulics...

Had a similar problem on my 2.3, it was the big multi plug under the unit not making good contact, removed, cleaned and fault cleared.

Check this on eBay number 4633117162. Not sure if they are the same across range.

Thanks Jim for help - checked out ebay one - and from scouting round does seem be different for 2.9 12v (mine) & 24v (ebay) - not sure about rest of range.
Have managed to locate one from: Rotherham Ford Spares, Unit 4 Lincoln St, rotherham, south Yorks, S60 1RP tel: 01709364555 for £50 incl p&p - part no matched and hope turns out OK.
(Hoping instruction on http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/absmodulator.htm are same for all models(
Thanks to all members for help and advice.

Must recommend Rotherham Ford Spares for service as pump & controller & all brackets came within 24hrs of paying and part nos etc matched exactly.  Felt OK for £50 incl p&p.  Just hope not too bad to fit and will work!

Just a quick note. When you have done all the repair work you will need to have the car on a diagnostic again to clear the fault from the module memmory then drive the car for a couple of miles before all OK. Had same problem with my 2.9 12V 95 Scorpio. Mine was bad connector to one of the front wheel sensors.

Thanks 'g'.  Assume this means that the ABS light will stay on (even if all OK) untill cleared from memory.  Was hoping light would go off if fixed, even if fault stored in memory.  Was hoping to avoid paying FMD big bucks again!  Is there any member who would be at Harewood I could pay to do this?

hi there

i think the light should go out if everything is ok.

when i had my car on the rolling road, i got the light on. after a few miles on the 'real' road, it cleared it's self.

failing that, i'd try disconnecting the battery for 10mins.

hth

i should add, i've the mk2.0 version.

Sincere thanks again to all members for contribution re ABS module.  One from Rotherham Ford Spares for £50 incl p&p has done the job.  The light has gone of completely.  Having the battery disconnected for 2 hrs while doing the job may have helped clear the fault/light - ok so I am a slow worker - says 45 mins approx in the instructions on this site!
