Title: Auto gearbox leaking?
Post by km449 on Apr 22nd, 2006, 11:36am
:(
Dripping oil from nearside front of car, onto tray and onto road, with burning smell. Oil is light brown colour
Engine oil level ok. Gearbox not so
Car is a 2.3 97P Ultima Estate with 138k on it.
What am I looking at here, what are the options, and what are the likely costs?
Thanks as always
Keith

Hmmm sounds like the cooler pipes may be worth a look.

Thanks for that.
Is it a FMD job or can my local garage sort it?

It should be a simple job for your local garage, there are 1 or 2 members on here that have actually done it themselves!

It is not a big job - just be careful that you don't let the gearbox run too low on fluid otherwise it will suddenly become much more expensive  ;)

Thanks for that, will book it in on Monday. If I top the level up in the morning is it safe just to run about in it over the next few days until it goes in to the garage?

How long is a piece of string? If it is just drips that are coming out and you keep an eye on the level then probably, yes. I would have a look at the state of the pipes before driving it any further though, just to check how bad they are  :)

Topped it up, started engine and immediate drip!
It's booked in for tomorrow, praise the lord for trustworthy local garages!, and hopefully all will be well soon.

All sorted, both pipes replaced, total cost 116.28 which seems good!
Thanks to all for your help and advice
